FEDS ALLOW LAWSUIT TO SHUT DOWN DIABLO CANYON TO PROCEED (tags)
On February 20 a Federal Court of Appeals in Washington DC rejected an attempt by Pacific Gas & Electric and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to quash a lawsuit filed by environmental group Friends Of the Earth (FOE).
The business sector of the U.S. — particularly the giant corporations that dominate our economy — literally regard themselves as above the law. Not only do they pay millions of dollars in legal bribes to politicians under the guise of “campaign contributions” to gain legislation that makes them BILLIONS in additional profits, they merrily disregard existing laws on issues ranging from labor to the environment to health and safety and paying their taxes. And a U.S. population brainwashed by decades of Right-wing propaganda extolling the private sector and the “free market” as good, efficient and honest — and damning the public sector as ineffective and hopelessly corrupt — has led most Americans to see government, not corporations, as their real enemy.

Apparently there are no records of the missing radioactive waste since 1968. This is an extremely unprofessional way to run a nuclear plant.
Ballots across the West promise Power to the people (tags)
Public ownership of electric power is an idea whose time has come – at least in San Francisco, Las Vegas and in the Big Sky state of Montana. Voters in these western locales have a chance to vote Nov. 5 for ballot questions that open the way for city or state takeover or buyout of private utility companies.
Pacifica Radio Fdn nearly bankrupt, KPFA in peril (tags)
Pacifica Foundation officers informed KPFA (94.1 FM, Berkeley, Ca) management that the organization is out of money, having spent over two million dollars over the past three years on corporate law firms, security services, and public relations agencies. Over the past two years, however, KPFA has exceeded all fundraising goals, and should show a surplus of over $200,000. Instead, KPFA has over $100,000 in unpaid and overdue bills, including $9,400 to PG&E for electricity. The station may be off the air if the PG&E bill is not paid by Monday, October 22.
