Eric Garcetti Allows Destruction of 40 Protected Trees (tags)
Over the strong objection of constituents, Eric Garcetti (district 13) approved a rezoning of land, part of a wildlife corridor in Echo Park-Elysian Park, from three to 15 houses and gave developers special permission to cut down 40 protected trees. Garcetti's environmental legacy also includes siding with developer Ralph Horowitz and Councilwoman Jan Perry regarding the South Central Farm. Twenty years ago, another pro-development Councilmember, Michael Woo, ran for Mayor--as Garcetti is now doing--but was opposed by a formidable group called Citizens for Anyone but Woo. Hopefully 2012/2013 will see Anyone but Garcetti.
“Largest gang takedown in United States history” (tags)
The early morning raids were aimed at 88 reputed gang members who were among 147 named in five federal racketeering indictments which accuses the southern Los Angeles County street gang with numerous felony crimes, including killing a sheriff’s deputy, murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, witness intimidation and committing hate crimes against African Americans.
Hidden Oasis Threatened by Development (tags)
A wildlife corridor in Echo Park is threatened by development. On Wednesday, November 14th, there will be a public hearing at City Hall concerning the developer's request for “a Small Lot Subdivision - from 3 into 16 lots and a zone change from R1 to RD6 rezoning.” It will take place in room 1020 at 10:30am. The issue will also be addressed at the Greater Echo Park Neighborhood Council Meeting on Tuesday, November 13th, 7pm at Logan Street School (1711 West Montana).
Urgent Action for women in Ciudad Juarez (tags)

As part of an international day of action, a teach-in to save the life of Stanley Tookie Williams took place at UC Santa Cruz on November 30, 2005. Speakers included Elisa Sanchez, Hector, Lance Lindsay, professor Paul Ortiz and professor Angela Davis. There was also a very special performance from Rainbow Theatre.

Marine Lance Cpl. Sergio Escobar, of Pasadena, CA, was killed in Iraq on October. 9, 2005, roughly two months after he arrived in Iraq.
