Michael Hudson on de-dollarization (tags)
Krugman is saying that other people have no reason at all for what they’re doing. And when they move out of the dollar, there’s no reason for them to do it. If you read what these countries say, they explain why they’re doing what they’re doing. .
Video: Republican Theme Song - Nothing Really Matters and The Fear Economy (tags)
Thanks to House Speaker John Boehner and his Republican caucus, the "Do-Nothing Congress" was so awful this year that I decided it deserved its own theme song. I had fun putting together this video—which also calls out some uplifting wins MoveOn members and other progressives were able to achieve this year

A War on the Poor by Paul Krugman (tags)
The state has a social nature and cannot only be a power and security state. Since the 1980s, the banks carried out a "quiet coup" (Simon Johnson) by spending over $4 billion on campaign contributions and lobbying over ten years.

Paul Krugman Discovers Marx (and Misses the Point) (tags)
In his recent New York Times op-ed piece, Princeton professor and regular columnist for The New York Times, Paul Krugman observed: The American economy is still, by most measures, deeply depressed. But corporate profits are at record high. It’s simple: profits have surged as a share of national income, while wages and other labor compensation are down. The pie isn’t growing the way it should — but capital is doing fine by grabbing an ever-larger slice, at labor’s expense.
To Krugman, the increasing ideological blindness of German politicians can only be explained by their belief that "hard times must be the necessary punishment for earlier excesses." Krugman overlooks that the hard times and excesses do not concern the same people.
"A seeming consensus among economists can virtually force the shaping of political opinions.. For 30 years, neoliberalism marginalized all other schools, above all Keynesianism - and all of us hit a brick wall.."

The Political Consequences of Stagnation (tags)
My apologies to T. S. Eliot, but September, not April, is the cruelest month. Before 9/11/2001, there was 9/11/1973, when Gen. Pinochet toppled the Allende government in Chile and ushered in a 17-year reign of terror. More recently, on 9/15/2008, Lehman Brothers went bust and torpedoed the global economy, turning what had been a Wall Street crisis into a near-death experience for the global financial system.
VIDEO: Paul Krugman - The Return of Depression Economics (tags)
The shadow banking system without regulations coupled with the mother of all bubbles in real estate made the 2008-2009 crisis worse than the 1929-1930 collapse.
How Neoliberal Ideology Destabilized the World Balance: Krugman and Galbraith (tags)
"If the depression has not openly erupted, all the features of the 1930s are having a spectacular comeback." (Paul Krugman) To free the US from the claws of private interests, James Galbraith urges the public authority to set social and ecological norms.
"Moment of Truth" by Paul Krugman (tags)
"We have a globalized financial system in which a crisis that began with a bubble in Florida condos and California McMansions has caused a monetary catastrophe in Iceland. We're all in this together, and need a shared solution."
"Partying Like It's 1929" by Paul Krugman (tags)
The banking crisis of the 1930s showed that unregulated, unsupervised financial markets can all too easily suffer catastrophic failure. As the decades passed, that lesson was forgotten-and now we're relearning it, the hard way.
"Betting the Bank" by Paul Krugman (tags)
Monetary policy can have magical effects; but sometimes the magic doesn't work. And this is one of those times. The ugly economics of the financial crisis will soon create some ugly politics.

Review of Paul Krugman's "The Great Unraveling" (tags)
"We face one of the most wicked rogue governments on earth in democratic enlightened America. This administration denies the legitimacy of the existing political system and seeks to abolish it.."
Paul Krugman: It's fair to be uncivil when liberty is at stake (tags)
'One of the problems with media coverage of this administration," wrote Eric Alterman in The Nation, "is that it requires bad manners." He's right. There's no nice way to explain how the Bush administration uses cooked numbers to sell its tax cuts, or how its arrogance and gullibility led to the current mess in Iraq. So it was predictable that the administration and its allies, no longer very successful at claiming that questioning the president is unpatriotic, would use appeals to good manners as a way to silence critics. Not, mind you, that Emily Post, the doyenne of etiquette, has taken over the Republican Party: The same people who denounce liberal incivility continue to impugn the motives of their opponents.
Renowned Economist Blasts Bush's Economic Policies (tags)
After Krugman's speech, Nobel laureate and UC Berkeley professor George Akerlof led a standing ovation and hundreds of people stood in line to buy Krugman's new book.
Kleptocratic States of America (tags)
"Cronyism is an important factor in the Iraqi debacle. It's not just that reconstruction is much more expensive than it should be. The really important thing is that cronyism is warping policy: By treating contracts as prizes to be handed to their friends, administration officials are delaying Iraq's recovery, with potentially catastrophic consequences.
A Coalition of the Elites (tags)
The extent of this admiistration's deceiving of the public is rather spectacular. I sometimes have the feeling that I don't live in one of the oldest democracies but in the Philippines under a new Marcos. This interview is translated from the German in Der Spiegel
In know you hate it, but things are getting better. Once again, thank you Walter E. Williams. We are so lucky to have you around.
NYT's Krugman: Huge Tax Cuts For Bush/Cheney Energy Cronies (tags)
A funny thing Krugman noticed: "Medium-sized" companies (compared to GM &IBM) racking in top dollar from the Republican "stimiulus" tax cuts include companies like TXU (formerly Dallas Power and Light), ChevronTexaco, Enron, Phillips Petroleum, IMC Global and CMS Energy-that tend to be in the energy or mining businesses, and to be based in or near Texas. Surprise!
