Spring Snails Survival Threatened by SNWA Pipeline (tags)
The spring snails of the Great Basin region are threatened by construction of the SNWA pipeline to Las Vegas. Spring snails are vital as primary consumer herbivores to reduce algae and thereby prevent eutrophication, also being the base of the trophic food web pyramid that supports trout, eagles and humans. Spring snails should be protected under ESA and are more valuable than golf courses and sprawl development north of Las Vegas.
Whittemore indicted on conduit contribution charges, lying to FBI (tags)
Nevada mega-developer Harvey Whittemore was indicted Weds. for illegal conduit campaign contributions to Senator Harry Reid from the Wingfield Co. (shared with another mega-developer Albert Seeno). It is understood that these contributions were to allow Wingfield's Coyote Springs housing development to proceed despite violating numerous environmental laws and requiring the contruction of the $15 billion SNWA pipeline from the rural districts 300 miles to the north.
Western Shoshone Visit UN for Human Rights Review (tags)
Members of the Western Shoshone Defense Project traveled to Geneva, Switzerland to discuss the human rights record of the U.S. government pertaining to indigenous peoples. Despite the Treaty of Ruby Valley (1863) signed with the Shoshone Nation and the U.S., many harmful activities have been permitted to occur on Shoshone land "Newe Sogobia" including cyanide leach pit gold mining, military weapons testing, nuclear waste disposal and now the Ruby natural gas pipeline cutting through pristine sage grouse habitat and numerous indigenous archeological sites sacred to the Shoshone and Paiute.

San Bruno, CA - Following another deadly natural gas pipeline rupture and explosion, it becomes clear that there are few safety standards and the promises of safety made by natural gas pipeline operator corporations like PG&E, El Paso and others are nothing less than blatant deceptions of the public trust. Federal regulators at PHMSA are beholden to corporate interests, NOT to public safety.
NV; New Cave Species at Risk from SNWA Pipeline (tags)
Two new cave species were discovered near Great Basin Natn'l Park's Lehman Caves, part of the same cave aquifer system that SNWA plans to pump billions of gallons away from with their proposed pipeline. The species found were a shrimp called an ostracod and a cave millipede. Both depend on groundwater in caves that would be taken to Whittemore's suburban sprawl developments outside of Vegas city limits.
US Senate Supports Israel 100% on 1/8/09 (tags)
The entire US Senate confirmed that it is a gang of Nazis with its 100% support of the heinous war crimes of Israel, paid for with our tax dollars, $15 million a day-$6 billion a year, with its 100% support of SR10 in a voice vote on 1/8/09. The House of Reps is expected to vote the same on 1/9/09, proving, again, this is a Nazi government.

It was hard to sit still and watch his smug bully’s face during the February 2 State of the Union speech. It was infuriating to watch the standing ovations of the surrounding Congress, or hear the fawning patter of the news media.
In official traditions, the President tells Congress each year how the "Union" (meaning the United States) is doing. In reality, the State of the Union speech is a "bully pulpit" where presidents build public support for their next actions.
George W. Bush didn’t dare breathe a word of truth about the real "State of the Union." Bush couldn’t mention how most of the planet thinks he is a bloody cowboy who wants to rule like a new Roman emperor. He didn’t mention how the invasion of Iraq has turned into a brutal counterinsurgency. He didn’t discuss how bitterly the U.S. "homeland" is divided between "two Americas"—half of which hates the sight of him.

Crescent Valley, NV - The United States Congressmen are mirroring the same deceptive tactics in Western Shoshone territory in Nevada as in Iraq, said Western Shoshone as legislation was pushed to compensate tribal members for Aboriginal land in an effort to seize it and open it up for mining, energy and nuclear corporations. While Western Shoshone maintain their Aboriginal land claim secured by the Treaty of Ruby Valley of 1863, their sacred Yucca Mountain is being gutted for nuclear dumping, their horses and cattle seized to make way for geothermal industries and the earth mutilated for gold extraction. "If the war on terrorism is about protecting this country, then why is our own government trying to take away our homelands?" said Mary McCloud, Western Shoshone elder.

Nevada Congressmen Reid and Gibbons, Gale Norton and our "National Interests" have taken a page from the influential Koch boys of Wichita, who were caught stealing oil from impoverished tribes in Oklahoma. "We want our fair share, and that's ALL of it!" It's 300 year old tradition in government: you sign treaties with the folks who rightly occupy the territory. Then you do whatever you please! And laugh all the way to the bank. The Native American Rights Fund has taken Gale Norton to court THREE times and WON each time, yet the Interior Department continues to act illegally...no different from what they're doing with Western Shoshone. This is not government. This is tyranny masked as politics. So is passage of HR884, HR 2869, HR2772.
