100 Years Ago African-Americans Marched Down 5th Avenue to Declare That Black Lives Matter (tags)

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 28, 1917, nearly 10,000 African-Americans marched down Fifth Avenue, in silence, to protest racial violence and white supremacy in the United States. New York City, and the nation, had never before witnessed such a remarkable scene. The “Silent Protest Parade,” as it came to be known, was the first mass African-American demonstration of its kind and marked a watershed moment in the history of the civil rights movement. As I have written in my book “Torchbearers of Democracy,” African-Americans during the World War I era challenged racism both abroad and at home. In taking to the streets to dramatize the brutal treatment of black people, the participants of the “Silent Protest Parade” indicted the United States as an unjust nation.

They don’t want hundreds of people from all over Los Angeles to march together against racist police violence. They want us to be quiet, divided and to wait for the results of their “investigation.” But the LAPD brass and the Mayor have already made their conclusions; they are justifying the police actions every step of the way. And the killer cop, Frank Hernandez, is still a free man. Marching on LAPD headquarters this Saturday is exactly what we must do. Some people want to divert the march, but we will not be diverted. We will not be divided. Instead, we will march directly to the doorstep of the police who harass and intimidate our communities each day. “ On the other hand, a motley group of less than a hundred led by the so called- “Southern California Immigrant Rights Coalition” in a separate sound truck together with the BRU and IAC marched away from the ANSWER march and went south to Macarthur Park. Their tactics were clear. They want to show the people of Westlake that they are leading the movement so they march separately and instead succeeded to divide the movement. The rally at the LPAD HQ lasted until 1:30 in the afternoon.

IMMIGRATION DEBATES UP IN THE US SENATE, NEW SANCTUARY MOVEMENT LAUNCHED IN THE U.S. (tags)

The US Senate, after a long delay will finally begin debates this coming Wednesday, May 16, on the much-awaited comprehensive immigration reform bill that will decide the fate of more than 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. The issue: Amnesty or a guest worker program? Senator Arlan Specter wanted the Senate Bill 2611 to be revived while the White House proposes a very expensive “ temporary guest worker program” The democratic party promised a comprehensive immigration reform that will be favorable to the large immigrant community where it derived its support during the last elections. On the other hand, the traditionally anti-immigrant republican party is trying to win over the conservative sector of the immigrant population by giving a limited reform. President Bush, whose wife is a Mexican, promised an immigration reform bill by the end of this year. Senators Ted Kennedy and John McCain are also bent to revive their own immigration bill that died last year during the Senate debates that gave way to SB 2611 that the Republican controlled lower house killed in 2006. The senate killed the oppressive HR 4437 but gave way to some of its anti-immigrant features in the SB 2611 that did not pass the republican controlled lower house. CDIR Immigrant Rights Update
