Syrian government officials could face war\r\ncrimes charges in the light\r\nof a\r\nhuge cache of evidence smuggled out of the country showing the\r\n\"systematic killing\" of about 11,000 detainees, according to three\r\neminent international lawyers.<\/span>
\r\n<\/span><\/span>
\r\nThe three, former prosecutors at the\r\ncriminal tribunals for the former\r\nYugoslavia and Sierra Leone, examined thousands of Syrian government\r\nphotographs and files recording deaths in the custody of regime\r\nsecurity forces from March 2011 to last August.<\/span>
\r\n<\/span><\/span>
\r\nMost of the victims were young men and many\r\ncorpses were emaciated,\r\nbloodstained and bore signs of torture. Some had no eyes; others showed\r\nsigns of strangulation or electrocution.<\/span>
\r\n<\/span><\/span>
\r\nThe UN and independent human rights groups\r\nhave documented abuses by\r\nboth Bashar al-Assad's government and rebels, but experts say this\r\nevidence is more detailed and on a far larger scale than anything else\r\nthat has yet emerged from the 34-month crisis.\r\n<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>
\r\nThe three lawyers interviewed the source, a\r\nmilitary policeman who worked\r\nsecretly with a Syrian opposition group and later defected and fled the\r\ncountry. In three sessions in the last 10 days they found him credible\r\nand truthful and his account \"most compelling\".<\/span>
\r\n<\/span><\/span>
\r\nThey put all evidence under rigorous\r\nscrutiny, says their report, which has been obtained by the\r\nGuardian and CNN.<\/span>
\r\n<\/span><\/span>
\r\nThe authors are Sir Desmond de Silva\r\nQC, former chief prosecutor of the special court for Sierra Leone, Sir\r\nGeoffrey Nice QC, the former lead prosecutor of former Yugoslavian\r\npresident Slobodan Milosevic, and Professor David Crane, who indicted\r\nPresident Charles Taylor of Liberia at the Sierra Leone court.<\/span>
