According\r\nto plans prepared by the US and Turkey, Pirinclik Air Base (*)\r\n, which is the closest NATO air base to Syria, will assume a\r\ncentral role in the event of an operation against Syria; reports\r\nHurriyet daily.
\r\n
\r\nA delegation of 20 officials from the United States European Command\r\n(EUCOM) inspected the air base in Diyarbakir for two days to assess its\r\ncurrent readiness for a possible military action.
\r\n<\/div>\r\n

\r\n
\r\n(*)  Hurriyet’s report refers to the NATO base in\r\nDiyarbakir as “2nd Air Force Command”\r\n[headquarters], instead of ‘Pirinclik Air Base’.\r\nAlthough the US Department of Defence\r\nannounced the return of the\r\nPirinclik Air Base to the Turkish Armed Forces in 1997, the base is\r\nstill being used as one of the 24\r\nNATO bases across Turkey and hosts\r\nNATO’s early-warning radar system.
\r\n
\r\nIt is also worth noting that another NATO’s Incirlik Air Base\r\nin Adana (southern Turkey) is in a similar proximity to\r\nTurkey’s border with Syria. Incirlik is currently being used\r\nas a command\r\ncenter of NATO-led covert\r\noperations against Syria.
