THE\r\nSECRETS of a subterranean factory engaged in the manufacture of Israeli\r\nnuclear weapons have been uncovered by The Sunday Times Insight team.
\r\n
\r\nHidden beneath the Negev desert, the factory has been producing atomic\r\nwarheads for the last 20 years. Now it has almost certainly begun\r\nmanufacturing thermo-nuclear weapons, with yields big enough to destroy\r\nentire cities.
\r\n
\r\nInformation about Israel's capacity to manufacture the bomb come from\r\nthe testimony of Mordechai Vanunu, a 31-year-old Israeli who worked as\r\na nuclear technician for nearly 10 years in Machon 2 - a top secret,\r\nunderground bunker built to provide the vital components necessary for\r\nweapons production at Dimona, the Israeli nuclear research\r\nestablishment.
\r\n
\r\nVanunu's evidence has surprised nuclear weapons experts who were\r\napproached by Insight to verify its accuracy because it shows that\r\nIsrael does not just have the atom bomb - which has been long suspected\r\n- but that it has become a major nuclear power.
\r\n
\r\nVanunu's testimony and pictures, which have been scrutinised by nuclear\r\nexperts on both sides of the Atlantic, show that Israel has developed\r\nthe sophisticated and highly classified techniques needed to build up a\r\nformidable nuclear arsenal. They confirm that:
\r\n
\r\nIsrael now ranks as the world's sixth most powerful nuclear power,\r\nafterAmerica, the Soviet Union, Britain France and China - with an\r\narsenal far greater than than those other countries, such as India,\r\nPakistan and South Africa, which have also been suspected of developing\r\nnuclear weapons.
\r\n
\r\nIt has possessed its secret weapons factory for more than two decades,\r\nhiding its plutonium extraction processes from spy satellites and\r\nindependent inspections during the 1960s by burying it beneath an\r\ninnocuous, little used building.
\r\n
\r\nThe plant is equipped with French plutonium extracting technology,\r\nwhich transformed Dimona from a civilian research establishment to a\r\nbomb production facility. Plutonium production rates amount to 40\r\nkilograms a year, enough to build 10 bombs. In the past six years\r\nIsrael has added further equipment to make components for\r\nthermo-nuclear devices.
\r\n
\r\nThe 26 megawatt reactor, also built by the French, has been expanded\r\nand is probably now operating at 150 megawatts to allow it to extract\r\nmore plutonium. An ingenious cooling system disguises the output.
\r\n
\r\nThe nuclear scientists consulted by The Sunday Times are convinced by\r\nVanunu's evidence. They calculate that at least 100 and as many as 200\r\nnuclear weapons of varying destructive power have been assembled - 10\r\ntimes the previously estimated strength of Israel's nuclear arsenal.
\r\n
\r\nThe scientists include Theodore Taylor, one of the world's most\r\nexperienced nuclear weapons experts. He was taught by Robert\r\nOppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, and worked on America's\r\nfirst bomb designs. He later went on to head the Pentagon's atomic\r\nweapons test programme.
\r\n
\r\nDr Taylor studied the photographs taken by Vanunu inside Dimona and a\r\ntranscript of his evidence near Washington DC last week. He said:\r\n'There should no longer be any doubt that Israel is, and for at least a\r\ndecade has been, a fully-fledged nuclear weapons state. The Israeli\r\nnuclear weapons programme is considerably more advanced than indicated\r\nby any previous report or conjectures of which I am aware. '
\r\n
\r\nHe added that Vanunu's testimony was entirely consistent with an\r\nIsraeli capacity to produce 10 nuclear weapons a year that are\r\nsignificantly smaller, lighter and more efficient than the first types\r\nof weapons developed by Russia, America, Britain, France or China.
\r\n
\r\nAnother scientist who authenticated the evidence uncovered by Insight\r\nis Dr Frank Barnaby, a nuclear physicist who worked at Aldermaston, the\r\nBritish nuclear weapons research establishment in Berkshire and who\r\nrecently retired as the director of the Swedish Institute for Peace\r\nResearch, which monitors nuclear profileration.
\r\n
\r\n'As a nuclear physicist,' says Barnaby 'it was clear to me that details\r\nhe gave me were scientifically accurate and clearly showed that he had\r\nnot only worked on these processes but knew the details of the\r\ntechniques. Also the flow rates through the plant, which he quotes\r\nexactly confirm the quantities of plutonium that were being made. '
\r\n
\r\nVanunu says that, despite tight security, he was able to smuggle a\r\ncamera into Machon 2 and take more than 60 photographs. Insight\r\ndebriefed him for four weeks and invited Barnaby to interview Vanunu in\r\nan attempt to find scientific flaws in his story. 'His testimony is\r\ntotally convincing,' concluded Barnaby.
\r\n
\r\nThe assessments of Taylor and Barnaby have been confirmed by other top\r\nnuclear scientists who were shown the pictures and detailed evidence.\r\nBecause they work in sensitive positions in Britain's atomic energy\r\nindustry and nuclear weapons manufacturing they have asked to remain\r\nanonymous.
\r\n
\r\nIsrael has refused to comment on the evidence. But it has confirmed\r\nthat Vanunu did work for the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission in\r\nDimona.  [...]
