\r\nBashar\r\nal-Assad took advice from Iran on how to handle the uprising against\r\nhis rule, according to a cache of what appear to be several thousand\r\nemails received and sent by the Syrian leader and his wife.
\r\n
\r\nThe Syrian leader was also briefed in detail about the presence of\r\nwestern journalists in the Baba Amr district of Homs and urged to\r\n\"tighten the security grip\" on the opposition-held city in November.
\r\n
\r\nThe revelations are contained in more than 3,000 documents that\r\nactivists say are emails downloaded from private accounts belonging to\r\nAssad and his wife Asma.
\r\n
\r\nThe messages, which have been obtained by the Guardian, are said to\r\nhave been intercepted by members of the opposition Supreme Council of\r\nthe Revolution group between June and early February.
\r\n
\r\nThe documents, which emerge on the first anniversary of the rebellion\r\nthat has seen more than 8,000 Syrians killed, paint a portrait of a\r\nfirst family remarkably insulated from the mounting crisis and\r\ncontinuing to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle.
\r\n
\r\nThey appear to show the president's wife spending thousands of dollars\r\nover the internet for designer goods while he swaps entertaining\r\ninternet links on his iPad and downloads music from iTunes.
\r\n
\r\nAs the world watched in horror at the brutal suppression of protests\r\nacross the country and many Syrians faced food shortages and other\r\nhardships, Mrs Assad spent more than £10,000 on candlesticks,\r\ntables and chandeliers from Paris and instructed an aide to order a\r\nfondue set from Amazon.
