U.S. Election 2012- President Obama and Mitt Romney Joke about Unemployment

by Lynn Lomibao Tuesday, Jun. 21, 2011 at 3:31 AM

U.S. Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander says President Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney are out of touch with America?s working class. ?It is no laughing matter when your unemployment benefits expire, when you are homeless, when your mortgage is behind, when your kids are hungry, when your car payment is 30 days late, or when you are faced with a stack of unpaid bills.?

Recently, President Barack Obama and Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney displayed their disconnect with America’s working class, both men making frivolous comments regarding the tens of millions that still remain unemployed nationwide.

During a meeting of the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, President Barack Obama was told: “I’m sure that when you implemented the Recovery Act, your staff briefed you on many of these challenges.” At this point, President Obama smiled and interjected, “Shovel-ready was not as …. uh ….shovel-ready as we expected.” The Council erupted in laughter.

While campaigning in Tampa, Florida, Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney visited a local coffee shop and spoke with a group of unemployed Floridians. The group was explaining the challenges of looking for work. According to The New York Time, when they finished, he weighed in with a predicament of his own. “I should tell my story,” Mr. Romney said. “I’m also unemployed.” Romney then chuckled.

U.S. Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander says President Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney are out of touch with America’s working class. “It is no laughing matter when your unemployment benefits expire, when you are homeless, when your mortgage is behind, when your kids are hungry, when your car payment is 30 days late, or when you are faced with a stack of unpaid bills.”

At the beginning of his presidency, President Obama had more than a trillion dollars to produce his “Shovel-ready Jobs.” Instead, President Obama and Congress have shoveled more than $4 trillion into the bank accounts of Wall Street bankers and the accounts of big corporations. In 2009, the Obama administration promised the Recovery Act would prevent the jobless rate from going over 8 percent. The jobless rate now stands at 9.1 percent.

Alexander says jobs and the economy will be the deciding factor for the millions of American voters when casting their vote for president in 2012; “We are in a deep recession and the U.S. economy is in a mess. The nation’s working class is not laughing; the Democrats and Republicans shouldn’t be laughing either.”

Stewart Alexander was the Vice Presidential Nominee for the Socialist Party USA in 2008 and has announced that he will be seeking the 2012 presidential nomination for the Socialist Party USA, the Green Party USA, and the Peace and Freedom Party- California.
