\r\nBehavior\r\nControl: Architecture of Modern Propaganda<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n \r\nZahir\r\nEbrahim |<\/b> Project\r\nHumanbeingsfirst.org<\/u><\/b><\/p>\r\n \r\nEdward\r\nBernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, began his seminal 1928 book\r\nsimply titled Propaganda,<\/i> with these ominous<\/span>\r\nwords:<\/p>\r\n \r\n'The\r\nconscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and\r\nopinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society.\r\nThose who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an\r\ninvisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.\r\nWe are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas\r\nsuggested, largely by men we have never heard of.' --- Edward\r\nBernays, 1928, pg.1, Propaganda<\/u><\/p>\r\n \r\nAldous\r\nHuxley, on the 30th anniversary of his own seminal 1931 allegorical\r\nnovel Brave New World,<\/i> made the following dreadful\r\nobservations in the very opening<\/span> segment of\r\nhis talk on the Ultimate Revolution upon which mankind and modernity\r\nare perilously perched:<\/p>\r\n \r\n'You\r\ncan do everything with bayonets except sit on them! If you are going\r\nto control any population for any length of time you must have some\r\nmeasure of consent. It's exceedingly difficult to see how pure\r\nterrorism can function indefinitely.<\/span> It can\r\nfunction for a fairly long time, but I think sooner or later you have\r\nto bring in an element of persuasion. An element of getting people to\r\nconsent to what is happening to them. Well, it seems to me that the\r\nnature of the Ultimate Revolution with which we are now faced is\r\nprecisely this: that we are in process of developing<\/span>\r\na whole series of techniques which will enable the controlling\r\noligarchy who have always existed and presumably always will exist,\r\nto get people actually to love their servitude! This is the, it seems\r\nto me the ultimate in malevolent revolution shall we say.' --- Aldous\r\nHuxley, 1962\r\nspeech at UC Berkeley, minute 04:06<\/u><\/p>\r\n \r\nIn\r\norder to understand how the comprehension<\/span>\r\nof both Edward Bernays and Aldous Huxley, though both long dead,\r\nstill manifests itself in these times, we must begin with the Mighty\r\nWurlitzer.<\/p>\r\n \r\nWhat\r\nis the 'Mighty Wurlitzer'?<\/b><\/p>\r\n \r\nIt\r\nused to be the honorific of Frank Wisner, the first chief of\r\npolitical warfare for the Central Intelligence Agency, used to\r\ndescribe the C.I.A.’s plethora of front organizations and\r\nnewsmedia stooges that he was capable of playing (like a great organ\r\nwith many keyboards) for synthesizing any propaganda tune that was\r\nneeded for the day. See Operation Mockingbird<\/b> (\r\nhttp:\/\/www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk\/JFKmockingbird.htm<\/u>\r\n) (PDF<\/u>).<\/p>\r\n \r\nThe\r\nfact that such an omnipresent Message-Machine is not ancient history\r\nbut very much current affairs, is underscored by this NYT headline\r\n“Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand”,<\/b>\r\nSunday, April\r\n20, 2008<\/u>\r\n( http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/6qhgfg<\/span>\r\n).<\/p>\r\n \r\nTherefore,\r\ntoday, I use the term 'Mighty Wurlitzer'<\/b> as a metaphor to\r\npluralistically refer to the same message-machine, i.e., the\r\nintelligence apparatus for manufacturing consent and controlling\r\ndissent, and its concomitant conscious manipulation of peoples'\r\nthoughts, feelings, actions and in-actions, in order to serve the\r\nprimacy interests of the ruling-elite. The latter are, invariably,\r\nalso the de facto owners of the complete messaging-system now even\r\nmore globally ubiquitous than when Frank Wisner played the world for\r\na fool. \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nThis\r\n'grand organ' is now able to even more effectively synthesize,\r\nimplant, and reinforce, all the right set of beliefs (myths) among\r\nthe entire world's public – by suitably combining 'events' with\r\nimaginative 'expos' writing – which appropriately primes the\r\nworld populations to acquiesce to the oligarchic agendas. While\r\nplaying this orchestra is now an integral part of all state-craft,\r\nits major musical themes are entirely determined by the behind the\r\nscenes owners of the system. While some might refer to the underlying\r\ntechniques as propaganda and psy-ops, 'Mighty Wurlitzer' singularly\r\ncaptures the messaging-system controlled under a unified purpose of\r\ncommand which is both highly compartmentalized and cellularized. Only\r\nthe Mighty Wurlitzer knows the entire tune. \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nWhat\r\nthis means is that not all who willingly cooperate with the Mighty\r\nWurlitzer in synchronistically humming its themes are knowingly being\r\npurveyors of its myths and deception. Many of its most shrill echoers\r\nare often well intentioned functionaries who are fed different\r\nmotivating myths at different levels in the hierarchy –\r\nsometimes the lie is different at every level – such that it\r\nsuitably motivates each according to their own predilection,\r\nprofessional station, and mission statement. \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nThe\r\nMighty Wurlitzer operates on the core premise which has been\r\nempirically shown to psychologically motivate most human action. That\r\npremise was elegantly captured in the following insightful\r\nobservation made at the so called “Terrorism\r\nStudy Group<\/u>”,\r\nthat \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\n“'Public\r\nAssumptions' Shape Views of History: Such presumptions are beliefs\r\n(1) thought to be true (although not necessarily known to be true\r\nwith certainty), and (2) shared in common within the relevant\r\npolitical community. The sources for such presumptions are both\r\npersonal (from direct experience) and vicarious (from books, movies,\r\nand myths).” <\/i>\r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nSuccessfully\r\nimplanting such presumptions and pre-suppositions among any group is\r\nto motivate its overall actions in accordance with those implanted\r\nbeliefs. Thus, many intelligent peoples for whom it is otherwise\r\ninexplicable to understand why they persist in 'United We Stand' with\r\nabsurdities, are motivated to react sympathetically to those\r\nabsurdities. \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nTo\r\nbarely catch a glimpse of how it's partially done, the following\r\ndescription by Col. Fletcher Prouty from the Preface to the first\r\nedition of his 1973 book “The\r\nSecret Team<\/u>”\r\nis instructive (PDF\r\nbook<\/u>):<\/p>\r\n \r\n'There\r\nis another category of writer and self-proclaimed authority on the\r\nsubjects of secrecy, intelligence, and containment. This man is the\r\nsuave, professional parasite who gains a reputation as a real\r\nreporter by disseminating the scraps and \"Golden Apples\"\r\nthrown to him by the great men who use him. This writer seldom knows\r\nand rarely cares that many of the scraps from which he draws his\r\nmaterial have been planted, that they are controlled leaks, and that\r\nhe is being used, and glorified as he is being used, by the inside\r\nsecret intelligence community.<\/p>\r\n \r\nAllen\r\nDulles had a penchant for cultivating a number of such writers with\r\nbig names and inviting them to his table for a medieval style\r\nluncheon in that great room across the hall from his own offices in\r\nthe old CIA headquarters on the hill overlooking Foggy Bottom. Here,\r\nhe would discuss openly and all too freely the same subjects that\r\nonly hours before had been carefully discussed in the secret inner\r\nchambers of the operational side of that quiet Agency. In the hands\r\nof Allen Dulles, \"secrecy\" was simply a chameleon device to\r\nbe used as he saw fit and to be applied to lesser men according to\r\nhis schemes. It is quite fantastic to find people like Daniel\r\nEllsberg being charged with leaking official secrets simply because\r\nthe label on the piece of paper said \"top secret,\" when the\r\nsubstance of many of the words written on those same papers was\r\npatently untrue and no more than a cover story. Except for the fact\r\nthat they were official lies, these papers had no basis in fact, and\r\ntherefore no basis to be graded top secret or any other degree of\r\nclassification. Allen Dulles would tell similar cover stories to his\r\ncoterie of writers, and not long thereafter they would appear in\r\nprint in some of the most prestigious papers and magazines in the\r\ncountry, totally unclassified, and of course, cleverly untrue.<\/p>\r\n \r\nIn\r\nevery case, the chance for complete information is very small, and\r\nthe hope that in time researchers, students, and historians will be\r\nable to ferret out truth from untruth, real from unreal, and story\r\nfrom cover story is at best a very slim one. Certainly, history\r\nteaches us that one truth will add to and enhance another; but let us\r\nnot forget that one lie added to another lie will demolish\r\neverything. This is the important point. Consider the past half\r\ncentury. How many major events -- really major events -- have there\r\nbeen that simply do not ring true? How many times has the entire\r\nworld been shaken by alarms of major significance, only to find that\r\nthe events either did not happen at all, or if they did, that they\r\nhad happened in a manner quite unlike the original story?'<\/p>\r\n \r\nColdly\r\nimplicit in Col. Prouty's afore-quoted empirical statement: “and\r\nthe hope that in time researchers, students, and historians will be\r\nable to ferret out truth from untruth, real from unreal, and story\r\nfrom cover story is at best a very slim one”,<\/b> is the\r\nMachiavellian notion of sewing faits accomplis in current affairs by\r\nstraight-jacketing all public discourse in deception, and leaving the\r\nferreting out of 'truth' to future generation of scholars and\r\nhistorians when separating myths from the calculus of hegemony can at\r\nbest only be a bogus academic exercise entirely irrelevant to\r\nreversing the faits accomplis already sewn. Fletcher Prouty's fabricated leaks noted\r\nabove, is the Wikileaks' July 2010 disclosures of 'The Afghanistan\r\nPapers' which revealed nothing new. \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nWikileaks\r\nhas always been a rather transparent Mighty Wurlitzer ops. It is\r\ntrivial to see through the absurdity of its existence despite it\r\npromoting itself as being a sort of watchdog upon the empire, and\r\ntherefore, ostensibly, being inimical to its unbridled quest for\r\n“full spectrum dominance”<\/i> – just like Al\r\nJazeera television based in Qatar, which too, absurdly enough, is\r\npermitted to function unhindered in the same nation as America's\r\nCENTCOM headquarters. Would it not be trivial for an armed to the\r\nteeth National Security State to take-out either apparatus rather\r\ntrivially? And that may happen once the useful idiots have outlived\r\ntheir utility, for he who sups with the devil must have a long\r\nspoon!<\/i><\/p>\r\n\r\n \r\nThe\r\nreason each is allowed to function is of course social engineering,\r\nthe sine qua non for waging modern warfare upon civilian populations\r\nby way of deception. It spans the entire gamut of engineering\r\nconsent, from mantra creation in the mainstream and diabolically\r\ncontrolling dissent in order to control all opposition, to actually\r\nfabricating the visible pretexts which can naturally ripen the\r\nconditions for the mantra of “clash of civilizations”\r\n<\/i>to be called real before the Western public in order to sustain\r\nthe otherwise untenable “imperial mobilization”.<\/i>\r\nZbigniew Brzezinski had most succinctly summed up this motivation in\r\nhis book The Grand Chessboard – American Primacy and Its\r\nGeostrategic Imperatives<\/i>: “Democracy is inimical to\r\nimperial mobilization”. <\/b>\r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nHow\r\ncan one tell manufactured reportage and fabricated leaks from the\r\nreal stuff? How can one see through the Mighty Wurlitzer? \r\n<\/p>\r\n \r\nAs\r\ndaunting as it might appear to the mainstream television watcher, it\r\nis in fact rather straightforward for those unencumbered by blind\r\nfaith in governments and its statecraft. Just look for the core-lies\r\nand unquestioned axioms of empire that are typically retained in the\r\n“leaks” and reportage which, in order to sound credible,\r\noften openly expose what is mostly already known anyway or\r\njudiciously employ some variation of “Limited\r\nHangout<\/u>”\r\nwrapped in a veneer of dissent, 'freedom of the press', and often\r\naccompanied by the facade of angst and opposition from the state. \r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n \r\nFurthermore,\r\nlook for some of the lauded dissent names rushing to support the\r\nLimited Hangout – just as it was with Daniel Ellsberg for his\r\ninfamous Pentagon Papers – <\/i>to afford a veneer of\r\nlegitimacy to the whistleblowing revelations of supposed\r\nstate-secrets having caused some great harm to the state. The\r\nextravagance enacted in the mainstream media, alternately making\r\nheroes of the whistleblowers and demonizing them, is a giveaway to\r\nthe circus show being enacted for plebeian consumption. For, it\r\nmatters not which side one takes, as both sides are patently false,\r\ncrafted of calculated omissions and half-truths that retain\r\ncore-lies, right out of the text book of the Technique\r\nof Infamy<\/u>\r\n: invent two lies and keep the public busy debating which of them\r\nis true!<\/b><\/p>\r\n \r\nThe\r\nrole of crafty omissions in fabricating propaganda was best captured\r\nby Aldous Huxley in his Preface to Brave New World<\/i> thusly:<\/p>\r\n \r\n‘The\r\ngreatest triumphs of propaganda have been accomplished, not by doing\r\nsomething, but by refraining from doing. Great is truth, but still\r\ngreater, from a practical point of view, is silence about truth. By\r\nsimply not mentioning certain subjects, by lowering what Mr.\r\nChurchill calls an “iron curtain” between the masses and\r\nsuch facts or arguments as the local political bosses regard as\r\nundesirable, totalitarian propagandists have influenced opinion much\r\nmore effectively than they could have done by the most eloquent\r\ndenunciations, the most compelling of logical rebuttals.<\/b> But\r\nsilence is not enough. If persecution, liquidation and the other\r\nsymptoms of social friction are to be avoided, the positive sides of\r\npropaganda must be made as effective as the negative.’ —\r\nAldous Huxley, Preface (circa 1946) to Brave New World, 1931, Harper,\r\npg. 11<\/p>\r\n \r\nTo\r\nuncover omissions in a discourse is very difficult for the public who\r\ndo not often have command over the domain in which the falsehoods are\r\nbeing perpetuated. Which is why ignorance, and being trusting of\r\nauthority figures and the state, are the pre-requisites for any vile\r\npropaganda to succeed! A well-bred lack of skepticism to authority\r\nfigures, whether to mainstream leaders in politics and experts in\r\nscientific disciplines, or to dissenting chiefs playing controlled\r\nopposition, thus becomes the heart of social engineering. This is\r\nalso why “leaking” information from “experts”\r\nand “insiders” commands such a premium in Machiavellian\r\nstatecraft. When used judiciously so as not to dilute its impact, it\r\ncan herd the flock in pretty much any direction that is desired.<\/p>\r\n \r\nAs\r\nfurther empirically evidenced in the forensic analysis presented\r\nhere, these so called whistleblowing of leaky buckets<\/i> also\r\nsucceed in accomplishing two important elements of statecraft:<\/p>\r\n \r\n\tvicariously\r\n\treinvigorate in the short-term public memory, the already\r\n\testablished-by-fiat facts and core-axioms of empire; \r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li> \r\n\testablish\r\n\tnew convenient facts on the ground which are subsequently accepted\r\n\tas revealed gospel truths because of the already established\r\n\tthought-stream by the scholars of empire that when something is held\r\n\tin secret or is classified and subsequently declassified, or is\r\n\tprematurely leaked to the public, that it must contain some genuine\r\n\t“state secrets”, and never red herrings. Such\r\n\tthought-streams enable the directives of NSC 10\/2 for plausible\r\n\tdeniability (and those like it which we do not know about) to be\r\n\ttrivially impressed upon the public mind (see Anatomy\r\n\tof Conspiracy Theory<\/u>).\r\n\tThese revelations of presumed “state-secrets”\r\n\tsubsequently become the new unquestioned backdrops for both state\r\n\tpolicies and public discourses – the new “doctrinal\r\n\tmotivations” – <\/i>with copious help from the Mighty\r\n\tWurlitzer's refined machinery. \r\n\t<\/p>\r\n<\/li><\/ul>\r\n \r\nThis\r\nenables the successful deployment of pre-planned policy prescriptions\r\nwhich craftily impel the various incantations of hegemony forward in\r\nbaby-steps. Both, domestically by incrementally clamping down hard on\r\nrising discontent in the name of “national security”, and\r\ninternationally by continuing to wage unpopular wars of preemption\r\nupon the 'untermenschen'. The infernal enemy has now been\r\n(re)confirmed to exist (despite popular skepticism) since even\r\nempire's own henchmen in their secret documents also affirm that\r\nbelief (sic!). Speak of self-servingly suffering from a incestuously\r\nself-reinforced “crippled epistemology”!<\/p>\r\n \r\nZbigniew\r\nBrzezinski in his book The Grand Chessboard,<\/i> un-abashedly\r\nexplained the need for such invigorations of the public mind in the\r\nfollowing majestic words, betraying his immense knowledge of\r\nMachiavellian statecraft's reliance on social engineering:<\/p>\r\n \r\n“Public\r\nopinion polls suggest that only a small minority (13 percent) of\r\nAmericans favor the proposition that 'as the sole remaining\r\nsuperpower, the US should continue to be the preeminent world leader\r\nin solving international problems'. ... Moreover, as America becomes\r\nan increasingly multicultural society, it may find it more difficult\r\nto fashion a consensus on foreign policy issues, except in the\r\ncircumstance of a truly massive and widely perceived direct external\r\nthreat. .... More generally, cultural change in America may also be\r\nuncongenial to the sustained exercise abroad of genuinely imperial\r\npower. That exercise requires a high degree of doctrinal\r\nmotivation, intellectual commitment, and patriotic gratification.”<\/i><\/b>\r\n(page 211 and onwards, PDF\r\nbook<\/u>)<\/p>\r\n \r\nPredictably,\r\nwith rising skepticism among the public, more “harmful leaks”\r\nwill occur, but understandably none which are actually substantial,\r\nlike blowing the lid on 9\/11 as an inside job<\/i>, directly naming\r\nthe top beneficiaries who shorted the Airline stocks raking in\r\nbillions, or revealing how BBC came to report the demolition of WTC-7\r\na full 20 minutes before it actually transpired, never mind lending\r\nconfirmation to any of the forensic detective work by independent\r\nresearchers from the debris of 9\/11, etceteras. And the main leaker\r\ndu jour, Mr. patsy Julian Assange, like Mr. patsy Lee Harvey Oswald\r\nbefore him, will be sacrificed, perhaps with a new 'lone gunmen'\r\nenactment, or perhaps juridically, to lend the hoopla even more\r\npublic respectability.
