Earthquake Ravaged Haiti Faces Cholera Epidemic, Post-Election Violence and Political Uncertainty

In advance of Haiti's Nov. 28 presidential and legislative election, there were calls by many politicians and activists for a delay in the vote, owing to the nation's ongoing earthquake disaster relief and an active cholera pandemic. But President Rene Preval prevailed and the election proceeded with the two top vote-getters unofficially announced as former first lady Mirlande Manigat and Preval's Unity Party candidate Jude Celestin, who would compete in the second round Jan. 16 runoff election.
