We announce them to present further proof of\r\nthe problematic nature of the current changes at WBAI and enlighten the\r\npeople as to the reality of what is taking place.\r\n\r\nLynne Stewart\r\nlynneportia@earthlink.net\r\n\r\n***************************************************************************************************************\r\n\r\n> [Original Message]\r\n\r\n> From: Amy Goodman <amy@democracynow.org>\r\n> To: <lynneportia@earthlink.net>\r\n> Date: 6\/7\/2009 3:20:03 PM\r\n> Subject: Letter to WBAI management, staff, listeners and supporters\r\n>\r\n> To: WBAI management, staff, listeners and supporters\r\n> From: Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, co-hosts of Democracy Now!\r\n>\r\n> We have recently learned that starting this week, the new management at\r\n> Pacifica station WBAI is shifting the broadcast time of Democracy\r\n> Now! from its customary 9 a.m. slot to 8 a.m. We hear this change\r\n> is part of a reorganization of programming that could end up eliminating\r\n> the popular and long-running Wake Up Call program on WBAI.\r\n>\r\n> This decision disturbs us deeply and we urge that it be reconsidered.\r\n>\r\n> We fully recognize that any station broadcasting DN! has the\r\n> right to choose the appropriate time slot for the show. In normal\r\n> circumstances, we would even welcome the chance to have DN! air in that\r\n> keyhour. But we believe this sudden change will only\r\n> exacerbate long-simmering internal divisions among Pacifica listeners\r\n> and staff.\r\n>\r\n> We are also dismayed by the recent firing of WBAI program director\r\n> Bernard White. Every station management has the right and responsibility\r\n> to hire and fire staff they feel most appropriate. But the removal of\r\n> Bernard, as far as we can tell, lacked the basic due process any\r\n> employee is entitled to under the law. Given Bernard's decades of\r\n> devotion and dedication to BAI, the way he was treated lacked basic\r\n> human consideration.\r\n>\r\n> These latest actions, however, are only symptoms of a bigger problem.\r\n>\r\n> Nearly a decade ago, an unprecedented listener movement won a great\r\n> victory. It ousted a Pacifica board and management that had lost its way\r\n> and forced a return to Pacifica's democratic founding principles. We\r\n> were both proud to be part of that movement. Like many, we believed it a\r\n> victory of historic proportions for media reform in America. But we have\r\n> grown increasingly distressed since then as we have watched the Pacifica\r\n> reform movement, once so powerful and united, fall into deeply divided\r\n> and warring camps.\r\n>\r\n> A governance structure that was meant to assure greater democracy turned\r\n> out to breed greater factionalism.\r\n> Many station managers and executives found it impossible to manage\r\n> while they answered to daily monitoring requests from newly empowered\r\n> community boards. Too many activists who had once blasted the old\r\n> Pacifica national board for gagging dissident producers, for unjust\r\n> firings, and for poor financial management, then turned around and\r\n> adopted practices that were eerily similar once they gained positions of\r\n> power. Legal costs skyrocketed as every action or firing by one group\r\n> led to new law suits by those on the other side. And most unfortunately,\r\n> charges of racism, elitism, narrow nationalism and opportunism have\r\n> become as much a part of the war of words at Pacifica these days as\r\n> American missiles in Pakistan or Afghanistan.\r\n>\r\n> In short, an extraordinary amount of time and energy has been spent in\r\n> what resembles more like the perpetual feuds of a dysfunctional family.\r\n> We urge our brothers and sisters to reject these deeply destructive\r\n> tendencies. Pacifica, along with the progressive media of which it is\r\n> such a vital part, cannot grow unless all of us learn to seek more\r\n> common ground.\r\n>\r\n> Democracy Now! was born and nurtured inside Pacifica. We still consider\r\n> ourselves part of that family even though ours has been an independent\r\n> show for years. Because of those deep ties, we urge that the scheduling\r\n> of Democracy Now! not be used as a weapon by the current management of\r\n> WBAI against its opponents.\r\n>\r\n>\r\n> In Struggle,\r\n>\r\n> Amy and Juan\r\n>\r\n>\r\n> *The views expressed here are the individual opinions of Juan and Amy\r\n> and do not necessarily reflect the views of the board and staff of\r\n> Democracy Now!\r\n\r\nhttp:\/\/www.facebook.com\/note.php?note_id=184195110261\r\n\r\n\r\n","author":"facebook for workers","parent_id":227975,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2009-06-09 15:32:12","modified":"2009-06-09 15:32:12","fileurl":""},{"id":228219,"heading":"dysfunctional, yep, it is ...and remains so","article":" perpetual feuds of a dysfunctional family","author":"akpfker","parent_id":227975,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2009-06-16 23:34:42","modified":"2009-06-16 23:34:42","fileurl":""}]}
