\r\n Breaking:\r\n <\/strong>Israeli\r\n ground troops enter Gaza<\/strong> --Israel begins using ground\r\n artillery, firing shells from tanks<\/strong> 03 Jan 2009 Israeli troops\r\n began moving into Gaza on Saturday night, Israel Defense Forces said.\r\n \"We have just a short while ago launched the second stage of the\r\n operation against Hamas infrastructure,\" IDF spokeswoman Maj. Avital\r\n Leibovich told CNN. Earlier, the Israelis used ground artillery for the\r\n first time in the eight-day-old conflict when Israeli tanks fired shells\r\n into Gaza from the northern and eastern borders.\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Israeli\r\n Ground Forces Push Into Gaza<\/b> 03 Jan 2009 Israeli troops backed by\r\n helicopters advanced into Gaza on Saturday, a Palestinian witness and the\r\n Israeli army said, in the first ground action of an eight-day offensive\r\n against Hamas in the Palestinian enclave. The small column of military\r\n vehicles crossed the boundary fence into the northern Gaza Strip under\r\n darkness, said the witness, a resident of Beit Lahiya.<\/p>\r\n

Thousands\r\n protest in Europe at Gaza offensive<\/b> 03 Jan 2009 Thousands of\r\n chanting, banner-waving demonstrators marched in cities across Europe on\r\n Saturday to demand a halt to Israeli bombing in the Gaza Strip. Protests\r\n were held or scheduled in Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland,\r\n Italy, the Netherlands and Spain as the Israeli offensive entered its\r\n second week. Kuwaitis also took to the streets, a day after bigger Middle\r\n East rallies.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n Reporting from Jerusalem -- Israeli troops and tanks crossed into\r\n the Hamas-ruled Gaza\r\n Strip this evening, widening a week-old assault aimed at halting\r\n the militant Palestinian group's rocket fire into Israel.
\r\n
\r\n A column of tanks, some firing their weapons, rolled into the\r\n northern part of the coastal enclave as Israeli combat helicopters\r\n flew overhead, according to Palestinian residents. Israeli\r\n television channels broadcast images of troops marching into the\r\n territory.\r\n <\/div>\r\n
\r\n  \r\n <\/div>\r\n
\r\n The ground offensive, launched after a week of punishing\r\n airstrikes, is designed to take control of Hamas' rocket-launching\r\n areas, the military announced. It said tank, artillery, special\r\n operations and intelligence units were taking part.
\r\n
\r\n As Israeli warplanes pounded Hamas positions today, a missile\r\n struck a mosque in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya during\r\n late-afternoon prayers, killing 13 people inside, Palestinian\r\n medical workers reported. Two of the dead were children, they\r\n said.
\r\n
\r\n The ground offensive began after dark, following a round of\r\n Israeli artillery fire that created a blanket of dust and smoke\r\n that obscured the troops' advance.\r\n <\/div>\r\n
\r\n  \r\n <\/div>\r\n
\r\n Israel launched the airstrikes Dec. 27 after Hamas called off a\r\n much-violated truce accord that lasted six months. The operation\r\n has killed more than 440 Palestinians, including dozens of\r\n civilians, according to Palestinian and United Nations counts, but\r\n has not stopped the rocket fire from Palestinian militants. Four\r\n Israelis have been killed.
\r\n
\r\n Thousands of Israeli troops had been massing along the border for\r\n days, and Israeli officials said preparations for the ground\r\n offensive were completed Friday.
\r\n
\r\n Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office said today that the\r\n government had ordered the call-up of tens of thousands of\r\n military reservists.
