Bay was so respected because he was a pioneer activist leader from MLQU since the 1960’s.

One of the founders of the Samahan ng Bagong Kabataan (SBK) of MLQU, he led the students of the said university in uniting with the Muslim students against the policies of the administration and gathering the students against US imperialism and the puppet US-Marcos regime before and during the FQS.

Bayani was one of the pillars of the nationalist movement and the propagation of the Pilipino language against the colonial pro-Spanish and pro-English language impositions during that era. One of the leaders of PAKSA, he led the burning of certificates and honors given by the bourgeoisie to set a new path for progressive writers and poets in the 1970’s.

He did not flinch even at the darkest moment of persecution against the student activists in the university and kept the flames of activism alive. He was one of our inspiration and a model of tenacity and greatness.

Bay maybe not one of the most known figures of the FQS like Monico Atienza and others but he cast a giant shadow as well. This can be seen through the accolades of those who knew him like Joey Munsayac (then editor of Ang MASA) and Boni Ilagan (with the Panday Sining) and the host of others.

He did not let his pen rest and his words spew deadly arrows against the ruling class and US imperialism. He was a patient and untiring teacher of Pilipino nationalism.

Palibhasa anak ng isang dakilang manunulat na si Alejandro Abadilla, dinaig niya ang kanyang ama sa pagiging makata, manunulat at isang lider aktibista.

He did not stop in being a writer. He joined the New People’s Army and waged armed struggle only his health stops him from this kind of job. But he came back to the academe and work tirelessly as a teacher.

My only regret is that when I visited his house in Tambunting before I left for the United States, he was not around and had no more opportunity to meet him again since 1971.

Goodbye dear comrade, eternal glory to you who joined the pantheon of the heroes of our people. Your sprit and ideals will always live in each one of us.

Paalam Ka Bay at Mabuhay Ka!

Arturo P. He is a worthy son of Mr. Alejandro Abadilla, a foremost Filipino Tagalog writer\/poet. But more than his father, Bayani (Hero in English) as he was known to be was a fiery student leader of MLQU even before and during during the First Quarter Storm. Here we reprinted his story for all of us to know.

He is a dear mentor, friend and most all-a comrade.

Al P.
