•\tElvira Arellano, an activist who left the protection of Adalberto United Methodist Church to actively campaign for the legalization of immigrants, was arrested recently during a speaking tour in Los Angeles and quickly deported to Tijuana, Mexico.

•\tA new report by the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics explains that somebody committing a first-time drug charge for marijuana can face tougher lifetime penalties than violent criminals, such as those convicted of premeditated assault, rape and murder.

•\tSince its acquisition by the New Times media chain, the high-profile alternative weekly newspaper, LA Weekly, once a beacon of progressive journalism, has dropped reporting on the Iraq war and other global issues, instead favoring hyper-local news coverage and cynical investigative \"hit jobs\" on the political elite, right and left.
