\r\n Tomorrow We'll\r\n Achieve Our Dreams and Goals!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/b>\r\n \r\n <\/span><\/p>\r\n
\r\n Organized by National Immigrant Solidarity Network, one of the leading\r\n coalitions involved in the March 25 Los Angeles \"Gran Marcha\" and\r\n the May\r\n 1st \"A Day Without Immigrants\" General Strike\/Boycott<\/span><\/b><\/strong>,\r\n there were approximately 180 people from over 80 organizations across the\r\n country in attendance.
\r\n
\r\n The conference represented diverse groups, including Latin@s, APIs, African\r\n Americans, African immigrants, European immigrants, LGBTQ, women,\r\n youth\/students, interfaith, peace\/global justice activists, white allies,\r\n labor, immigrant day laborers and community organizers from two dozen states.\r\n Community\/grassroots immigrant activists from across the country met\r\n face-to-face for the first time to discuss how to collectively build a new\r\n national, broad-based, immigrant rights\/civil rights movement.
\r\n \r\n \r\n <\/span><\/p>\r\n
\r\n During the strategy section on Sunday (7\/30), we re-affirmed our \"Ten\r\n Points of Unity\" for the immigrant movement<\/span><\/b><\/strong>,\r\n and adopted the national immigrant strategy\/action plans for the next 3-6\r\n months with more than a dozen working groups, creating a intern-coordinating\r\n committee and point persons to coordinate each working group. We also began\r\n the discussion of creating a concept of the immigrant solidarity movement:\r\n grassroots, volunteer-based, direct action-oriented with strong emphases of\r\n community outreach and popular education. \r\n \r\n <\/span><\/p>\r\n
\r\n Some of the highlights included:\r\n \r\n <\/span><\/p>\r\n
\r\n
\r\n - Linking our struggles to the anti-war and global justice movements, and\r\n mutually supporting each other's cause.
\r\n
\r\n - Institutionalizing the May 1st boycott \"A Day Without Immigrants\"\r\n and beginning planning for May 1st 2007.
\r\n
\r\n - Supporting nationwide immigrant marches\/actions during the Labor Day\r\n Weekend, and the September 7th \r\n Camp\r\n \r\n Democracy\r\n 's Immigrant Rights Day in \r\n \r\n Washington\r\n \r\n DC\r\n \r\n , called by antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan.
\r\n
\r\n - Direct actions as an important part of the immigrant movement.
\r\n
\r\n - Grassroots organizing strategy and education programs.
\r\n
\r\n - 'La gran marcha fronteriza flor y canto' - Conduct a Border Walk during\r\n Spring Break 2007, from San Diego, CA to Brownsville, TX.
\r\n
\r\n - Working towards the creation of model legislation that resonates with the\r\n movement's principles and values
\r\n
\r\n - Legislative campaigns, such as immigrant voter registration, and supporting\r\n bills such as the Legal Immigration & Family Equity Act and the Uniting\r\n Americans Act.
\r\n
\r\n - National support hotline for immigrants who need legal referral, detention\r\n support, or help with other urgent needs.
\r\n
\r\n - Developing a vocabulary to replace \"amnesty\" and\r\n \"legalization.\"
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n There's no doubt that this conference has been the beginning of an historical\r\n turning point for the immigrant solidarity movement. With other immigrant\r\n conferences in \r\n Chicago\r\n , \r\n IL\r\n organized by the March 10th Movement and in \r\n \r\n Oakland\r\n , \r\n CA\r\n \r\n organized by NNIRR, we show that we have the will and strength to continue our\r\n momentum, and that we have the passion and energy to fight for our justice and\r\n dignity in the years to come.
