Farzad Kohan, a highly perceptive, gifted, multimedia artist, whose works have garnered respect and acclaim among critics and collectors, will gain even wider exposure with a featured exhibition in Los Angeles this June. Kohan's latest works may be viewed at Seyhoun Gallery from June 3 through June 9, 2006. Beginning with an artist reception on Saturday, June 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. Kohan cleverly mixes paint and found objects, forming a three-dimensional format that brings to life a series of lithe, gracefully bending figures that seem to move through space on a fluid emotionally packed journey.
"As an artist , Kohan gently speaks,"I have lived and worked on several continents, and rely on my world view to inform my inner mind. Living in Los Angeles, one of the most iconoclastic cities of all, inspires me to draw upon my self-training and motivation to constantly produce unique and personal artworks. Farzad Kohan’s delicate-looking scupltural artpieces are created with rough-hewn shapes, braided from a mixture of clay and wood chips laid over a wire frame, are a direct dichotomy of the final sensitive -looking creations. A message maybe about our societal structure?
Kohan’s sculptures clearly represent what our human core could be, freed of gender, race, culture or any other excuses we use to judge one another. What a stunning, insprirational message.
"THE SYSTEM", one of Kohan's appropriately named pieces, traces a symbolic path through the many man-made rules and societal pressures a person faces in their lifetime. Featuring the sculptures in an open air presentation, gave the illusion of freedom. But as Kohan's more recent pieces matured and developed,
the artist, ironically confined his dramatic artpieces to solid black painted boxes, like a theatrical set designer’s "black box theatre" setting.These dioramas, actually give Kohan's pieces a more meaningful backdrop of emotion, by showing quite literally the “boxes” we put ourselves into. Kohan now allows the figures to transcend those limitations as we, as human beings, must do in the challenges of our life's restrictions or the perceptions thereof, teaching us to reach out beyond ,to find our own sense of freedoms, despite our personal challenges.
In "SEARCHING," the solitary entity perches on top of his cage, arms outstretched. He may be alone, but he is free. Free to express. A perfect example of Kohan's messages, through these dance-like choreographed figures, that pull at the core of your soul.
As this perceptive artists reveals, “What I am trying to say is that we place regulations on ourselves without thinking. At the same time, separating ourselves from one another, nd yet they binding us together. There is an ambiguity to stripping away the exterior trappings. In the end, all we really have in common is our limited time on this planet. All we can control is how we spend that time. Will we separate ourselves, or will we seek out the common ground?”

The exhibit features Kohan's characteristically elongated, yearning shapes suspended from the ceiling, inviting the observer to form his or her own interpretations from all angles.
