They rejected outright the offer of a wildlife rescue organization to coax the animal into a cage, and also claimed that they could not shoot it with a traquilizer dart because it was \"a few hundred yards from a school.\" Of course it apparantly never occurred to them that if the tranquilizer didn't work in time and the tiger started moving towards the school they could have shot it then with a gun. Nah. And of course we are not told whether the cat was ever walking or running towards the school in the first place or whether any students were outside the building. Or whether they contacted the school to make sure everyone stayed inside until the tiger was tranquilized.
