They promoted the idea of the separation of church and state in places where it was ahead of its time.\r\n\r\nIt was an idea, and a practice, that worked to inspire people to fight against colonizers, or to overthrow feudalism, monarchy, and the bourgeios elite.\r\n\r\nWhat's happened since, is that these countries have transformed into something else that's not communism.  The change, however, is mostly coming from within.  Changes in China, Vietnam, Russia, and other countries, comes from within.  Communism created the preconditions for &quot;velvet revolutions&quot; where people attempt change without civil war.\r\n\r\nThe question to ask is, &quot;would these countries have been able to get where they are today without having gone through Communism?&quot;\r\n\r\nI think the answer is basically &quot;no&quot;.  During colonial phases, land and resource ownership is extremely imbalanced and unfair.
