Hurtgen stepped in and averted a\r\nthreatened lockout of hotel workers by the 9 hotels who make up the Los\r\nAngeles Employers\r\nCouncil.\r\n\r\n2,800 housekeepers, dishwashers, cooks, bellmen and banquet waiters, \r\nsome of\r\nwhom have worked for the hotels for 15 years or more, would have been \r\nlocked\r\nout of their jobs and prevented from working if the lockout had taken \r\nplace.\r\n\r\nMr. Hurtgen met separately on Monday, August 16th with representatives \r\nof\r\nboth sides in Los Angeles.\r\n\r\nThe hotels agreed to call off their lockout and halt their campaigning\r\nagainst the union through one-on-one meetings and captive audience \r\nmeetings.\r\nThe union, which had supported mediation, agreed to no picket lines in \r\nfront\r\nof the\r\nhotels.\r\n\r\nThis is the latest news in the campaign of hotel workers to win a new\r\ncontract with the 9 luxury hotels that negotiate together. These \r\nhotels, in\r\nlate June, terminated the union contract and declared an impasse in\r\nnegotiations. Hotels began implementing provisions of their last \r\ncontract\r\noffer despite the rejection of that offer by 92% of the workers on June \r\n1st.\r\nThe hotels would not agree to set future dates to meet with the union\r\nnegotiating committee.\r\n\r\nA lockout would have hurt workers and their families and would be\r\ndevastating for the Los Angeles economy and the tourists who are \r\nvisiting\r\nour city. While we are happy that a lockout was averted, we know that \r\nit is\r\nstill a possibility and that we must continue to organize support from \r\nthe\r\ncommunity to assist hotel workers if a lockout happens in the future.\r\n\r\nPlease mark your calendar for Friday September 3 at 11:00 am when we \r\nwill\r\nunveil a "Wall of Support" with the names of 2,800 community members \r\nwho\r\nhave pledged to stand with hotel workers as they struggle for a new \r\ncontract\r\nand a decent life.","author":"abbymac","parent_id":115666,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2004-08-19 22:18:52","modified":"2004-08-19 22:18:52","fileurl":""}]}
