The negotiations are being sold as a way of achieving peace while sparing the lives of innocent civilians in the city; but it sends the wrong message to both our enemies and our friends. It teaches them that the United States rewards violence and terrorism and confirms the Arab belief that the Americans are soft. I hope I am wrong, but I'm afraid the decision to pull back from the city will not end well for the United States or our Iraqi allies.\r\n\r\n The reason is simple: The fighters in Fallujah do not seek peace. They want to drive the Americans out of Iraq. They are like venomous snakes: They will kill us or our Iraqi allies if we do not kill them first. There is no negotiating with them. They see such negotiations as a sign of weakness; indeed, the fact that the powerful United States is negotiating with them permits the insurgents to claim that they have prevailed over the most powerful military in the world. \r\n\r\n","author":"MTO","parent_id":109308,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2004-05-03 11:43:02","modified":"2004-05-03 11:43:02","fileurl":""},{"id":109315,"heading":"Your reasoning is simple","article":"'The most powerful military on earth'\r\nblah blah blah.\r\nSuch machismo. It's right out of Orwell. Have you noticed that about half the speeches GWB has ever given use the following words:\r\n\r\n1. Terror\r\n2. Hate \r\n3. Freedom (almost always connected to war)\r\n3. Defend\r\n4. God\r\n\r\n"We will show them that we are strong. The terrorists hate Americans. They hate our freedom. We need to show them that we are strong."\r\n\r\nNow, if you sift through these same speeches, it is not often that you will hear the word "peace" mentioned. Phrases that emphasize seeking peaceful resolutions, upholding peace throughout the Middle East, and so on, are a rarity.\r\n\r\nI also notice that "freedom" now seems to be used by GWB and company only if it does not specifically indicate any freedoms that should be afforded to citizens of the US or other countries. "Freedoms," as specific rights enacted to protect the citizenry, is no longer a media buzzword. We are concerned with protecting "freedom" as a vague, indefinable thing that America supposedly represents, and the rest of the world is supposed to kiss our feet because we are the paragons of this thing. So, what is it, exactly? They can't say; maybe I'm too hung up on all the recently enacted legislation that undermines my constitutional rights to see the true glory that all the other countries are raving about. \r\n\r\nI'd like to see GWB try to convince the American public that he supports "freedom" in a specific context, such as the freedom to have a fair and speedy trial (Guantanamo Bay), freedom from invasion of privacy (Patriot Act), First Amendment freedoms (Free Speech Zones), or the Freedom to have a civil union recognized by state and federal authorities (Gay marriage).\r\n\r\n____________\r\n\r\n"No, I know all the war rhetoric, but it's all aimed at achieving peace." George W. Here are some examples. \r\n\r\nCLEAR SKIES INITIATIVE \r\nguts the clean air act allowing companies to pollute. \r\n\r\nCO-LATERAL DAMAGE \r\nWhen Americans kill non-American civilians, even when they do it deliberately. \r\n\r\nHEALTHY FORESTS INITIATIVE \r\nhands stewardship of the forests over to the logging industry and allows renewed cutting of old growth forests. \r\n\r\nNO DRILLING IN NATIONAL PARKS \r\nmeans no parade drills. Drilling for oil is fine, especially in the Padre Island National Seashore or in Alaskan nature preserves. \r\n\r\nSource: http:\/\/mindprod.com\/bush.html\r\n____________\r\nlinks:\r\ndubyaspeak - http:\/\/www.dubyaspeak.com\/best.shtml\r\n\r\n"Weapons of Mass Distraction: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq"\r\nhttp:\/\/www.charlotte.com\/mld\/observer\/news\/6452663.htm?1c","author":"lucius","parent_id":109308,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2004-05-07 18:49:28","modified":"2004-05-07 18:49:28","fileurl":""}]}
