Sunday at 9 AM Jim DeMaegt from the National Lawyers Guild came to the Vons supermarket in Hermosa Beach to speak about the strikers civil rights—free speech. He asked the strikers not to be intimidated by the police and the manager of the store.

Jim DeMaegt told the crowd that it was legal to talk to Vons costumers crossing the picket line. He asked the police officers present at the store to stop harassing strikers. “Angry workers have the right by law to tell, to the people crossing the picket line, how they fell about them,” he said.

The police showed up, but with a lawyer present, the strikers felt confident about keeping on talking to people crossing the picket line. “Today we learned about our right, and we are not going to shup up just because the cops showed up,” said a striker.

After the rally, when a bunch of strikers showed up at the Hermosa Beach police station to fill a police report, sergeant Lance Heard ask them to leave. Jim DeMaegt told the officer that we were in our right to come in at the police station to report aggressive --behaviors, shoving and throwing a cup full of coffee-- against the strikers and their supporters. When Jim refused to leave, the police arrested him at 11:30 AM.
