You know, the link you click on and it shows you the latest comments. Those are just chat rooms. (LA SF.....)

However the sites such as Boston IMC just post articles and nobody really comments, it does not \"bump the thread to the top\"

I sort of like the yahoo news system where you can forum chat about the article but it is separate. Combined with the BBC system where they invite you to comment on a topic. That is strictly moderated. The comments are delayed and screened so the comments on an article are just that. comments on the article. The discussion an article spawns should be in a discussion thread. There the topic can develop.

Look at how many news articles on LA IMC develop into \"discussions\" about nothing to do with the article! Like most BBSs and forums that deal with politics, it's gone to hell. So we're stopping *one* BBS-like feature, popular with trolls, for now, until we can come up with something better.\r\n\r\nWe're not trying to run a BBS here. At one time, there *was* a discussion forum, and some people used it, but none of the IMCers and few community people ever read it.\r\n\r\nPersonally, I approach the site as an information resource for a community of several thousand leftist and liberal-left people in LA who are involved with, or want to get involved with, local and international political issues. Everything, and everyone else is secondary to this constituency.\r\n\r\nRegarding the lousy cooks - you tell them they aren't satisfactory. If you can't do that, and you have to go get mommy to take care of business, you're not going to make much of an anarchist. Likewise, personal responsibility is vital to an anarchist society. (I could use some work in that regard.)\r\n\r\n"Anarchy to be succesful needs a quorum system to solve problems within the configuration. However that involves votes, and a majority rule....... and by definition is no longer anarchy but a democratic system. "\r\n\r\nYou don't know what anarchism is. Democracy is inherent in most of the better known forms of anarchism. The IMC, for example, employs a decisionmaking system called "consensus." It's analagous to Robert's Rules, but instead of voting, it focuses on formulating group decisions\/actions that are satisfactory to all (within the group). Consensus has it's limits, but, the spirit of the system is cooperation and collective action, and within small groups, is democratic. Decision making rights are limited to those who contribute some personal labor toward the IMC project, and attend f2f meetings.\r\n\r\n- another imc volunteer","author":"johnk","parent_id":93196,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-11-07 09:51:34","modified":"2003-11-07 09:51:34","fileurl":""},{"id":93257,"heading":"LA-IMC Runs Amuck!","article":"Whiny, pisant leftists should not be allowed run trains or operate websites.\r\n\r\nWe all knew it was going to happen sooner or later!","author":"Choo chooooo!","parent_id":93196,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","created":"2003-11-07 21:20:23","modified":"2005-08-15 01:47:11","fileurl":"\/usr\/local\/www-domains\/la.indymedia.org\/public\/uploads\/2003\/11\/mdf399670.jpg","image":{"original":"\/usr\/local\/www-domains\/la.indymedia.org\/public\/uploads\/2003\/11\/mdf399670.jpg"}},{"id":93258,"heading":"Train","article":"The locomotive appears to have come off the rails by leaning too far to the left, and the marking on its face clearly reads DEM.\r\n\r\nIt's nice to have visual proof of something we've been saying for a long time.\r\n\r\n","author":"derailed to the left","parent_id":93196,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-11-07 21:23:34","modified":"2003-11-07 21:23:34","fileurl":""}]}
