Suburban american culture is just so bland and pale. if you may have noticed, people living in suburbanville,IL are the carbon copies of people in suburbanville, WI. "american" culture is so pale that if people from india moved into your neighbourhood and became the majority, americans would become "offended" and move away. non-americans are forced to change their names from say "siddarth" to "sid" simply because americans are too fucking - i dont know what the fuck to call it - to be able to just say "siddarth". all the asian immigrants have real names "hay keung lo" but change them to american names such as "macy" because american culture breeds thoughts of cultural inferiority into the minds of non-americans. sure in america you have freedom. you have the FREEDOM to chose to assimilate into "american" McCulture or otherwise be considered a "filthy foreigner". also, considering the role that america plays in this world, americans should (unlike the case today)actually have a good understanding of geography, world conlfict, world history, world politics. they should be able to form their own arguments rather than simply repeating whatever the president or like minded people say.\r\n\r\nas for "my" country...\r\n\r\ngood because it is highly developed. the buildings are clean, new, modern and luxurious. unlike in america, the roads are... well good quality roads. basically, even tho we couldnt vote, we were given an extremely high standard of living while not paying a cent in taxes. also, it is an amazingly pluralistic and international society (80% of the population comprises of non-citizens). even more so than singapore. in my high school of 750 students, i personally knew people from over 50 different countries (citizens of those countries). for that reason "my" country valued diversity (unlike in america where diversity simply means the colour of your skin) and there was no cultural discrimination. there was not "tolerance" for "other" cultures, but sheer acceptance. cultures weren't even considered "other" cultures. and there was no reinforcement of the WE vs THEY idea in terms of international politics.\r\n\r\nwhere "my" country fails is in the arena of human rights. although there was no cultural discrimination, there was a good dollop of racial discrimination. the government exploited the labor of the poorer people (especially from the subcontinent). minimum wage was absolutely pathetic. for example construction workers working at least 12 hour days were provided with low quality food and housing and were only paid $250 a month where most of the money would be sent back home to their families. since it was opening up to the west, it wanted to portray a "western" and modern image - what other logical answer is there than to hire white people as CEOs and the like. if a western company rep met a fellow western person representing a business from "my" country, that western company would take the local company that much more seriously. in "my" country, white skin is a precious precious commodity. if you americans want to be treated like god, have a high standard of living and pay no taxes ALL in exchange for no vote and no ability to criticize the government (which is no issue unless you are humanitarians which i doubt many of you are), then by all means i STRONGLY suggest you move to my country. also "my" country did not grant citizenship rights to anyone who did not have a citizen parent (still wondering why i refer to it as "my" country?). prisons were horrendous needless to say. i am no longer a legal resident of "my" country. if i wanted to visit, i would have to apply and pay for a visit visa (even tho i lived there for 14 years) whereas american and british citizens can just arrive at the airport and have their passport stamped with a 3 month visit visa (free, quick, no hassle)\r\n\r\nOVERALL, basically if you were european, australian or american (i.e. white or strictly speaking had an US or euro passport), you would be fine... automatically. if you were any other colour you would be fine ONLY if you had money)\r\n.\r\nbecause of this is why i would never even consider fighting for "my" country.\r\n--------------------------------------------------------------------------\r\ntherefore i feel the US can learn a lot from my country and my country can learn a lot from the US.\r\n\r\nmy country NEEDS to learn to respect human rights and human dignity with regards to poor and disadvantaged people. the US and the UN, instead of supporting "my" country should instead pressure it through limited economic sanctions to take measures to protect immigrant labor. if human rights were protected and the country remained in its current state of development, i wouldnt mind at all not having the ability to vote.\r\n\r\nthe US NEEDS to become pluralistic and accepting of other cultures (and don't tell me that it is because it really isnt). immigrants are all expected to mold into "american" culture. if americans had a greater understanding of "other" cultures, they would realize that the world is not that much different from them and they would realize that the world is not out to get them "because they don't like americas freedom and religious tolerance". they would instead realize much of world anger comes from the hypocrisy of US foreign policy rather than the values that america stands for.\r\nit is PRECISELY because America's foreign policy DOESN'T reflect American values is why people get pissed off.\r\n\r\nBTW... i think its about time that i let you all know that the whole "Americans are fucking dumb" was just to piss all of you off. and must i say i did a damn good job. \r\n\r\nnot all americans are fucking dumb, but im sure a lot of you will agree that a significant portion of americans are.","author":"The New X","parent_id":40989,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-03-27 17:14:15","modified":"2003-03-27 17:14:15","fileurl":""},{"id":41503,"heading":"The New X","article":"I still haven't grown any testicles.
