Out of all of \r\nthe atrocities that it cites, and I think we can all agree \r\nthat any innocent victim is an atrocity, not one \r\nreference is made to the years of suffering that \r\nSaddam, himself, has inflicted on the Iraqi people. \r\nEvery piece of literature on this site is directed toward \r\nthe horrible United States. Washington's policy traces an \r\neven longer, more shrouded and fateful history. Forty \r\nyears ago, the Central Intelligence Agency, under \r\nPresident John F. Kennedy, conducted its own regime change \r\nin Baghdad, carried out in collaboration with Saddam \r\nHussein.\r\n\r\nThe Iraqi leader seen as a grave threat in 1963 was Abdel \r\nKarim Kassem, a general who five years earlier had deposed \r\nthe Western-allied Iraqi monarchy. Washington's role in \r\nthe coup went unreported at the time and has been little \r\nnoted since. America's anti-Kassem intrigue has been \r\nwidely substantiated, however, in disclosures by the \r\nSenate Committee on Intelligence and in the work of \r\njournalists and historians like David Wise, an authority \r\non the C.I.A.\r\n\r\n From 1958 to 1960, despite Kassem's harsh repression, the \r\nEisenhower administration abided him as a counter to \r\nWashington's Arab nemesis of the era, Gamal Abdel Nasser \r\nof Egypt - much as Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush \r\nwould aid Saddam Hussein in the 1980's against the common \r\nfoe of Iran. By 1961, the Kassem regime had grown more \r\nassertive. Seeking new arms rivaling Israel's arsenal, \r\nthreatening Western oil interests, resuming his country's \r\nold quarrel with Kuwait, talking openly of challenging the \r\ndominance of America in the Middle East - all steps Saddam \r\nHussein was to repeat in some form - Kassem was regarded \r\nby Washington as a dangerous leader who must be removed.\r\n\r\nIn 1963 Britain and Israel backed American intervention in \r\nIraq, while other United States allies - chiefly France \r\nand Germany - resisted. But without significant opposition \r\nwithin the government, Kennedy, like President Bush today, \r\npressed on. In Cairo, Damascus, Tehran and Baghdad, \r\nAmerican agents marshaled opponents of the Iraqi regime. \r\nWashington set up a base of operations in Kuwait, \r\nintercepting Iraqi communications and radioing orders to \r\nrebels. The United States armed Kurdish insurgents. The \r\nC.I.A.'s "Health Alteration Committee," as it was \r\ntactfully called, sent Kassem a monogrammed, poisoned \r\nhandkerchief, though the potentially lethal gift either \r\nfailed to work or never reached its victim.\r\n\r\nThen, on Feb. 8, 1963, the conspirators staged a coup in \r\nBaghdad. For a time the government held out, but \r\neventually Kassem gave up, and after a swift trial was \r\nshot; his body was later shown on Baghdad television. \r\nWashington immediately befriended the successor regime. \r\n"Almost certainly a gain for our side," Robert Komer, a \r\nNational Security Council aide, wrote to Kennedy the day \r\nof the takeover.\r\n\r\nAs its instrument the C.I.A. had chosen the authoritarian \r\nand anti-Communist Baath Party, in 1963 still a relatively \r\nsmall political faction influential in the Iraqi Army. \r\nAccording to the former Baathist leader Hani Fkaiki, among \r\nparty members colluding with the C.I.A. in 1962 and 1963 \r\nwas Saddam Hussein, then a 25-year-old who had fled to \r\nCairo after taking part in a failed assassination of \r\nKassem in 1958.\r\n\r\nAccording to Western scholars, as well as Iraqi refugees \r\nand a British human rights organization, the 1963 coup was \r\naccompanied by a bloodbath. Using lists of suspected \r\nCommunists and other leftists provided by the C.I.A., the \r\nBaathists systematically murdered untold numbers of Iraq's \r\neducated elite - killings in which Saddam Hussein himself \r\nis said to have participated. No one knows the exact toll, \r\nbut accounts agree that the victims included hundreds of \r\ndoctors, teachers, technicians, lawyers and other \r\nprofessionals as well as military and political figures.\r\n\r\nThe United States also sent arms to the new regime, \r\nweapons later used against the same Kurdish insurgents the \r\nUnited States had backed against Kassem and then \r\nabandoned. Soon, Western corporations like Mobil, Bechtel \r\nand British Petroleum were doing business with Baghdad - \r\nfor American firms, their first major involvement in Iraq.\r\n\r\nBut it wasn't long before there was infighting among \r\nIraq's new rulers. In 1968, after yet another coup, the \r\nBaathist general Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr seized control, \r\nbringing to the threshold of power his kinsman, Saddam \r\nHussein. Again, this coup, amid more factional violence, \r\ncame with C.I.A. backing. Serving on the staff of the \r\nNational Security Council under Lyndon Johnson and Richard \r\nNixon in the late 1960's, I often heard C.I.A. officers - \r\nincluding Archibald Roosevelt, grandson of Theodore \r\nRoosevelt and a ranking C.I.A. official for the Near East \r\nand Africa at the time - speak openly about their close \r\nrelations with the Iraqi Baathists.\r\n\r\nThis history is known to many in the Middle East and \r\nEurope, though few Americans are acquainted with it, much \r\nless understand it. Yet these interventions help explain \r\nwhy United States policy is viewed with some cynicism \r\nabroad. George W. Bush is not the first American president \r\nto seek regime change in Iraq. Mr. Bush and his advisers \r\nare following a familiar pattern.\r\n\r\nThe Kassem episode raises questions about the war at hand. \r\nIn the last half century, regime change in Iraq has been \r\naccompanied by bloody reprisals. How fierce, then, may be \r\nthe resistance of hundreds of officers, scientists and \r\nothers identified with Saddam Hussein's long rule? Why \r\nshould they believe America and its latest Iraqi clients \r\nwill act more wisely, or less vengefully, now than in the \r\npast?\r\n\r\nIf a new war in Iraq seems fraught with danger and \r\nuncertainty, just wait for the peace.\r\n\r\n\r\nRoger Morris, author of "Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise \r\nof an American Politician," is completing a book about \r\nUnited States covert policy in Central and South Asia.\r\n","author":"ROGER MORRIS","parent_id":40641,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","created":"2003-03-30 06:44:40","modified":"2005-08-15 01:20:13","fileurl":"\/usr\/local\/www-domains\/la.indymedia.org\/public\/uploads\/2003\/03\/image545062x.jpg","image":{"original":"\/usr\/local\/www-domains\/la.indymedia.org\/public\/uploads\/2003\/03\/image545062x.jpg"}},{"id":43628,"heading":"IT'S NOT ABOUT OIL OR IRAQ","article":"IT'S NOT ABOUT OIL OR IRAQ. \r\nIT'S ABOUT THE US AND EUROPE \r\nGOING HEAD-TO-HEAD ON WORLD ECONOMIC DOMINANCE. \r\nBy Geoffrey Heard \r\nMelbourne, Australia \r\n\r\nSummary: Why is George Bush so hell bent on war with Iraq? Why does \r\nhis administration reject every positive Iraqi move? It all makes \r\nsense when you consider the economic implications for the USA of not \r\ngoing to war with Iraq. The war in Iraq is actually the US and Europe \r\ngoing head to head on economic leadership of the world. \r\n\r\nAmerica's Bush administration has been caught in outright lies, gross \r\nexaggerations and incredible inaccuracies as it trotted out its \r\nlitany of paper thin excuses for making war on Iraq. Along with its \r\ntwo supporters, Britain and Australia, it has shifted its ground and \r\nreversed its position with a barefaced contempt for its audience. It \r\nhas manipulated information, deceived by commission and omission and \r\nfrantically "bought" UN votes with billion dollar bribes. \r\n\r\nFaced with the failure of gaining UN Security Council support for \r\ninvading Iraq, the USA has threatened to invade without \r\nauthorisation. It would act in breach of the UN's very constitution \r\nto allegedly enforced UN resolutions. \r\n\r\nIt is plain bizarre. Where does this desperation for war come from? \r\n\r\nThere are many things driving President Bush and his administration \r\nto invade Iraq, unseat Saddam Hussein and take over the country. But \r\nthe biggest one is hidden and very, very simple. It is about the \r\ncurrency used to trade oil and consequently, who will dominate the \r\nworld economically, in the foreseeable future -- the USA or the \r\nEuropean Union. \r\n\r\nIraq is a European Union beachhead in that confrontation. America had \r\na monopoly on the oil trade, with the US dollar being the fiat \r\ncurrency, but Iraq broke ranks in 1999, started to trade oil in the \r\nEU's euros, and profited. If America invades Iraq and takes over, it \r\nwill hurl the EU and its euro back into the sea and make America's \r\nposition as the dominant economic power in the world all but \r\nimpregnable. \r\n\r\nIt is the biggest grab for world power in modern times. \r\n\r\nAmerica's allies in the invasion, Britain and Australia, are betting \r\nAmerica will win and that they will get some trickle-down benefits \r\nfor jumping on to the US bandwagon. \r\n\r\nFrance and Germany are the spearhead of the European force -- Russia \r\nwould like to go European but possibly can still be bought off. \r\n\r\nPresumably, China would like to see the Europeans build a share of \r\ninternational trade currency ownership at this point while it \r\ncontinues to grow its international trading presence to the point \r\nwhere it, too, can share the leadership rewards. \r\n\r\nDEBATE BUILDING ON THE INTERNET \r\n\r\nOddly, little or nothing is appearing in the general media about this \r\nissue, although key people are becoming aware of it -- note the \r\nrecent slide in the value of the US dollar. Are traders afraid of \r\nwar? They are more likely to be afraid there will not be war. \r\n\r\nBut despite the silence in the general media, a major world \r\ndiscussion is developing around this issue, particularly on the \r\ninternet. Among the many articles: Henry Liu, in the 'Asia Times' \r\nlast June, it has been a hot topic on the Feasta forum, an \r\nIrish-based group exploring sustainable economics, and W. Clark's \r\n"The Real Reasons for the Upcoming War with Iraq: A Macroeconomic and \r\nGeostrategic Analysis of the Unspoken Truth" has been published by \r\nthe 'Sierra Times', 'Indymedia.org', and 'ratical.org'. \r\n\r\nThis debate is not about whether America would suffer from losing the \r\nUS dollar monopoly on oil trading -- that is a given -- rather it is \r\nabout exactly how hard the USA would be hit. The smart money seems to \r\nbe saying the impact would be in the range from severe to \r\ncatastrophic. The USA could collapse economically. \r\n\r\nOIL DOLLARS \r\n\r\nThe key to it all is the fiat currency for trading oil. \r\n\r\nUnder an OPEC agreement, all oil has been traded in US dollars since \r\n1971 (after the dropping of the gold standard) which makes the US \r\ndollar the de facto major international trading currency. If other \r\nnations have to hoard dollars to buy oil, then they want to use that \r\nhoard for other trading too. This fact gives America a huge trading \r\nadvantage and helps make it the dominant economy in the world. \r\n\r\nAs an economic bloc, the European Union is the only challenger to the \r\nUSA's economic position, and it created the euro to challenge the \r\ndollar in international markets. However, the EU is not yet united \r\nbehind the euro -- there is a lot of jingoistic national politics \r\ninvolved, not least in Britain -- and in any case, so long as nations \r\nthroughout the world must hoard dollars to buy oil, the euro can make \r\nonly very limited inroads into the dollar's dominance. \r\n\r\nIn 1999, Iraq, with the world's second largest oil reserves, switched \r\nto trading its oil in euros. American analysts fell about laughing; \r\nIraq had just made a mistake that was going to beggar the nation. But \r\ntwo years on, alarm bells were sounding; the euro was rising against \r\nthe dollar, Iraq had given itself a huge economic free kick by \r\nswitching. \r\n\r\nIran started thinking about switching too; Venezuela, the 4th largest \r\noil producer, began looking at it and has been cutting out the dollar \r\nby bartering oil with several nations including America's bete noir, \r\nCuba. Russia is seeking to ramp up oil production with Europe \r\n(trading in euros) an obvious market. \r\n\r\nThe greenback's grip on oil trading and consequently on world trade \r\nin general, was under serious threat. If America did not stamp on \r\nthis immediately, this economic brushfire could rapidly be fanned \r\ninto a wildfire capable of consuming the US's economy and its \r\ndominance of world trade. \r\n\r\nHOW DOES THE US GET ITS DOLLAR ADVANTAGE? \r\n\r\nImagine this: you are deep in debt but every day you write cheques \r\nfor millions of dollars you don't have -- another luxury car, a \r\nholiday home at the beach, the world trip of a lifetime. \r\n\r\nYour cheques should be worthless but they keep buying stuff because \r\nthose cheques you write never reach the bank! You have an agreement \r\nwith the owners of one thing everyone wants, call it petrol\/gas, that \r\nthey will accept only your cheques as payment. This means everyone \r\nmust hoard your cheques so they can buy petrol\/gas. Since they have \r\nto keep a stock of your cheques, they use them to buy other stuff \r\ntoo. You write a cheque to buy a TV, the TV shop owner swaps your \r\ncheque for petrol\/gas, that seller buys some vegetables at the fruit \r\nshop, the fruiterer passes it on to buy bread, the baker buys some \r\nflour with it, and on it goes, round and round -- but never back to \r\nthe bank. \r\n\r\nYou have a debt on your books, but so long as your cheque never \r\nreaches the bank, you don't have to pay. In effect, you have received \r\nyour TV free. \r\n\r\nThis is the position the USA has enjoyed for 30 years -- it has been \r\ngetting a free world trade ride for all that time. It has been \r\nreceiving a huge subsidy from everyone else in the world. As it debt \r\nhas been growing, it has printed more money (written more cheques) to \r\nkeep trading. No wonder it is an economic powerhouse! \r\n\r\nThen one day, one petrol seller says he is going to accept another \r\nperson's cheques, a couple of others think that might be a good idea. \r\nIf this spreads, people are going to stop hoarding your cheques and \r\nthey will come flying home to the bank. Since you don't have enough \r\nin the bank to cover all the cheques, very nasty stuff is going to \r\nhit the fan! \r\n\r\nBut you are big, tough and very aggressive. You don't scare the other \r\nguy who can write cheques, he's pretty big too, but given a \r\n'legitimate' excuse, you can beat the tripes out of the lone gas \r\nseller and scare him and his mates into submission. \r\n\r\nAnd that, in a nutshell, is what the USA is doing right now with Iraq. \r\n\r\nAMERICA'S PRECARIOUS ECONOMIC POSITION \r\n\r\nAmerica is so eager to attack Iraq now because of the speed with \r\nwhich the euro fire could spread. If Iran, Venezuela and Russia join \r\nIraq and sell large quantities of oil for euros, the euro would have \r\nthe leverage it needs to become a powerful force in general \r\ninternational trade. Other nations would have to start swapping some \r\nof their dollars for euros. \r\n\r\nThe dollars the USA has printed, the 'cheques' it has written, would \r\nstart to fly home, stripping away the illusion of value behind them. \r\nThe USA's real economic condition is about as bad as it could be; it \r\nis the most debt-ridden nation on earth, owing about US$12,000 for \r\nevery single one of it's 280 million men, women and children. It is \r\nworse than the position of Indonesia when it imploded economically a \r\nfew years ago, or more recently, that of Argentina. \r\n\r\nEven if OPEC did not switch to euros wholesale (and that would make a \r\nvery nice non-oil profit for the OPEC countries, including minimising \r\nthe various contrived debts America has forced on some of them), the \r\nUS's difficulties would build. Even if only a small part of the oil \r\ntrade went euro, that would do two things immediately: \r\n\r\n* Increase the attractiveness to EU members of joining the \r\n'eurozone', which in turn would make the euro stronger and make it \r\nmore attractive to oil nations as a trading currency and to other \r\nnations as a general trading currency. \r\n\r\n* Start the US dollars flying home demanding value when there isn't \r\nenough in the bank to cover them. \r\n\r\n* The markets would over-react as usual and in no time, the US \r\ndollar's value would be spiralling down. \r\n\r\nTHE US SOLUTION \r\n\r\nAmerica's response to the euro threat was predictable. It has come \r\nout fighting. \r\n\r\nIt aims to achieve four primary things by going to war with Iraq: \r\n\r\n* Safeguard the American economy by returning Iraq to trading oil in \r\nUS dollars, so the greenback is once again the exclusive oil currency. \r\n\r\n* Send a very clear message to any other oil producers just what \r\nwill happen to them if they do not stay in the dollar circle. Iran \r\nhas already received one message -- remember how puzzled you were \r\nthat in the midst of moderation and secularization, Iran was named as \r\na member of the axis of evil? \r\n\r\n* Place the second largest reserves of oil in the world under direct \r\nAmerican control. \r\n\r\n* Provide a secular, subject state where the US can maintain a huge \r\nforce (perhaps with nominal elements from allies such as Britain and \r\nAustralia) to dominate the Middle East and its vital oil. This would \r\nenable the US to avoid using what it sees as the unreliable Turkey, \r\nthe politically impossible Israel and surely the next state in its \r\nsights, Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of al Qaeda and a hotbed of \r\nanti-American sentiment. \r\n\r\n* Severe setback the European Union and its euro, the only trading \r\nbloc and currency strong enough to attack the USA's dominance of \r\nworld trade through the dollar. \r\n\r\n* Provide cover for the US to run a covert operation to overturn the \r\ndemocratically elected government of Venezuela and replace it with an \r\nAmerica-friendly military supported junta -- and put Venezuala's oil \r\ninto American hands. \r\n\r\nLocking the world back into dollar oil trading would consolidate \r\nAmerica's current position and make it all but impregnable as the \r\ndominant world power -- economically and militarily. A splintered \r\nEurope (the US is working hard to split Europe; Britain was easy, but \r\nother Europeans have offered support in terms of UN votes) and its \r\neuro would suffer a serious setback and might take decades to recover. \r\n\r\nIt is the boldest grab for absolute power the world has seen in \r\nmodern times. America is hardly likely to allow the possible \r\nslaughter of a few hundred thousand Iraqis stand between it and world \r\ndomination. \r\n\r\nPresident Bush did promise to protect the American way of life. This \r\nis what he meant. \r\n\r\nJUSTIFYING WAR \r\n\r\nObviously, the US could not simply invade Iraq, so it began casting \r\naround for a 'legitimate' reason to attack. That search has been one \r\nof increasing desperation as each rationalization has crumbled. First \r\nIraq was a threat because of alleged links to al Qaeda; then it was \r\nproposed Iraq might supply al Qaeda with weapons; then Iraq's \r\nmilitary threat to its neighbours was raised; then the need to \r\ndeliver Iraqis from Saddam Hussein's horrendously inhumane rule; \r\nfinally there is the question of compliance with UN weapons \r\ninspection. \r\n\r\nThe USA's justifications for invading Iraq are looking less \r\nimpressive by the day. The US's statements that it would invade Iraq \r\nunilaterally without UN support and in defiance of the UN make a \r\ntotal nonsense of any American claim that it is concerned about the \r\nworld body's strength and standing. \r\n\r\nThe UN weapons inspectors have come up with minimal infringements of \r\nthe UN weapons limitations -- the final one being low tech rockets \r\nwhich exceed the range allowed by about 20 percent. But there is no \r\nsign of the so-called weapons of mass destruction (WMD) the US has so \r\nconfidently asserted are to be found. Colin Powell named a certain \r\nnorth Iraqi village as a threat. It was not. He later admitted it was \r\nthe wrong village. \r\n\r\n'Newsweek' (24\/2) has reported that while Bush officials have been \r\ntrumpeting the fact that key Iraqi defector, Lt. Gen. Hussein Kamel, \r\ntold the US in 1995 that Iraq had manufactured tonnes of nerve gas \r\nand anthrax (Colin Powell's 5 February presentation to the UN was \r\njust one example) they neglected to mention that Kamel had also told \r\nthe US that these weapons had been destroyed. \r\n\r\nParts of the US and particularly the British secret 'evidence' have \r\nbeen shown to come from a student's masters thesis. \r\n\r\nAmerica's expressed concern about the Iraqi people's human rights and \r\nthe country's lack of democracy are simply not supported by the USA's \r\nhistory of intervention in other states nor by its current actions. \r\nThink Guatemala, the Congo, Chile and Nicaragua as examples of a much \r\nlarger pool of US actions to tear down legitimate, democratically \r\nelected governments and replace them with war, disruption, \r\nstarvation, poverty, corruption, dictatorships, torture, rape and \r\nmurder for its own economic ends. The most recent, Afghanistan, is \r\nnot looking good; in fact that reinstalled a murderous group of \r\nwarlords which America had earlier installed, then deposed, in favour \r\nof the now hated Taliban. \r\n\r\nSaddam Hussein was just as repressive, corrupt and murderous 15 years \r\nago when he used chemical weapons, supplied by the US, against the \r\nKurds. The current US Secretary for Defence, Donald Rumsfeld, so \r\nvehement against Iraq now, was on hand personally to turn aside \r\ncondemnation of Iraq and blame Iran. At that time, of course, the US \r\nthought Saddam Hussein was their man -- they were using him against \r\nthe perceived threat of Iran's Islamic fundamentalism. \r\n\r\nRight now, as 'The Independent' writer, Robert Fisk, has noted, the \r\nUS's efforts to buy Algeria's UN vote includes promises of re-arming \r\nthe military which has a decade long history of repression, torture, \r\nrape and murder Saddam Hussein himself would envy. It is estimated \r\n200,000 people have died, and countless others been left maimed by \r\nthe activities of these monsters. What price the US's humanitarian \r\nconcerns for Iraqis? (Of course, the French are also wooing Algeria, \r\ntheir former north African territory, for all they are worth, but at \r\nleast they are not pretending to be driven by humanitarian concerns.) \r\n\r\nIndonesia is another nation with a vote and influence as the largest \r\nMuslim nation in the world. Its repressive, murderous military is \r\nregaining strength on the back of the US's so-called anti-terror \r\ncampaign and is receiving promises of open and covert support -- \r\nincluding intelligence sharing. \r\n\r\nAND VENEZUELA \r\n\r\nWhile the world's attention is focused on Iraq, America is both \r\nopenly and covertly supporting the "coup of the rich" in Venezuela, \r\nwhich grabbed power briefly in April last year before being \r\nintimidated by massive public displays of support by the poor for \r\ndemocratically-elected President Chavez Frias. The coup leaders \r\ncontinue to use their control of the private media, much of industry \r\nand the ear of the American Government and its oily intimates to \r\ncause disruption and disturbance. \r\n\r\nVenezuela's state-owned oil resources would make rich pickings for \r\nAmerican oil companies and provide the US with an important oil \r\nsource in its own backyard. \r\n\r\nMany writers have noted the contradiction between America's alleged \r\ndesire to establish democracy in Iraq while at the same time, \r\nactively undermining the democratically-elected government in \r\nVenezuela. Above the line, America rushed to recognise the coup last \r\nApril; more recently, President Bush has called for "early \r\nelections", ignoring the fact that President Chavez Frias has won \r\nthree elections and two referendums and, in any case, early elections \r\nwould be unconstitutional. \r\n\r\nOne element of the USA's covert action against Venezuela is the \r\nbehaviour of American transnational businesses, which have locked out \r\nemployees in support of "national strike" action. Imagine them doing \r\nthat in the USA! There is no question that a covert operation is in \r\nprocess to overturn the legitimate Venezuelan government. Uruguayan \r\ncongressman, Jose Nayardi, made it public when he revealed that the \r\nBush administration had asked for Uruguay's support for Venezuelan \r\nwhite collar executives and trade union activists "to break down \r\nlevels of intransigence within the Chavez Frias administration". The \r\nprocess, he noted, was a shocking reminder of the CIA's 1973 \r\nintervention in Chile which saw General Pinochet lead his military \r\ncoup to take over President Allende's democratically elected \r\ngovernment in a bloodbath. \r\n\r\nPresident Chavez Frias is desperately clinging to government, but \r\nwith the might of the USA aligned with his opponents, how long can he \r\nlast? \r\n\r\nTHE COST OF WAR \r\n\r\nSome have claimed that an American invasion of Iraq would cost so \r\nmany billions of dollars that oil returns would never justify such an \r\naction. \r\n\r\nBut when the invasion is placed in the context of the protection of \r\nthe entire US economy for now and into the future, the balance of the \r\nargument changes. \r\n\r\nFurther, there are three other vital factors: \r\n\r\nFirst, America will be asking others to help pay for the war because \r\nit is protecting their interests. Japan and Saudi Arabia made serious \r\ncontributions to the cost of the 1991 Gulf war. \r\n\r\nSecond -- in reality, war will cost the USA very little -- or at \r\nleast, very little over and above normal expenditure. This war is \r\nalready paid for! All the munitions and equipment have been bought \r\nand paid for. The USA would have to spend hardly a cent on new \r\nhardware to prosecute this war -- the expenditure will come later \r\nwhen munitions and equipment have to be replaced after the war. But \r\nmunitions, hardware and so on are being replaced all the time -- \r\ncontracts are out. Some contracts will simply be brought forward and \r\nsome others will be ramped up a bit, but spread over a few years, the \r\ncost will not be great. And what is the real extra cost of an army at \r\nwar compared with maintaining the standing army around the world, \r\nrunning exercises and so on? It is there, but it is a relatively \r\nsmall sum. \r\n\r\nThird -- lots of the extra costs involved in the war are dollars \r\nspent outside America, not least in the purchase of fuel. Guess how \r\nAmerica will pay for these? By printing dollars it is going to war to \r\nprotect. The same happens when production begins to replace hardware. \r\ncomponents, minerals, etc. are bought in with dollars that go \r\noverseas and exploit America's trading advantage. \r\n\r\nThe cost of war is not nearly as big as it is made out to be. The \r\ncost of not going to war would be horrendous for the USA -- unless \r\nthere were another way of protecting the greenback's world trade \r\ndominance. \r\n\r\nAMERICA'S TWO ACTIVE ALLIES \r\n\r\nWhy are Australia and Britain supporting America in its transparent \r\nIraqi war ploy? \r\n\r\nAustralia, of course, has significant US dollar reserves and trades \r\nwidely in dollars and extensively with America. A fall in the US \r\ndollar would reduce Australia's debt, perhaps, but would do nothing \r\nfor the Australian dollar's value against other currencies. John \r\nHoward, the Prime Minister, has long cherished the dream of a free \r\ntrade agreement with the USA in the hope that Australia can jump on \r\nthe back of the free ride America gets in trade through the dollar's \r\nposition as the major trading medium. That would look much less \r\nattractive if the euro took over a significant part of the oil trade. \r\n\r\nBritain has yet to adopt the euro. If the US takes over Iraq and \r\nblocks the euro's incursion into oil trading, Tony Blair will have \r\ngiven his French and German counterparts a bloody nose, and gained \r\nmore room to manouevre on the issue -- perhaps years more room. \r\nBritain would be in a position to demand a better deal from its EU \r\npartners for entering the "eurozone" if the new currency could not \r\nmake the huge value gains guaranteed by a significant role in world \r\noil trading. It might even be in a position to withdraw from Europe \r\nand link with America against continental Europe. \r\n\r\nOn the other hand, if the US cannot maintain the oil trade dollar \r\nmonopoly, the euro will rapidly go from strength to strength, and \r\nBritain could be left begging to be allowed into the club. \r\n\r\nTHE OPPOSITION \r\n\r\nSome of the reasons for opposition to the American plan are obvious \r\n-- America is already the strongest nation on earth and dominates \r\nworld trade through its dollar. If it had control of the Iraqi oil \r\nand a base for its forces in the Middle East, it would not add to, \r\nbut would multiply its power. \r\n\r\nThe oil-producing nations, particularly the Arab ones, can see the \r\nwriting on the wall and are quaking in their boots. \r\n\r\nFrance and Germany are the EU leaders with the vision of a resurgent, \r\nunited Europe taking its rightful place in the world and using its \r\neuro currency as a world trading reserve currency and thus gaining \r\nsome of the free ride the United States enjoys now. They are the ones \r\nwho initiated the euro oil trade with Iraq. \r\n\r\nRussia is in deep economic trouble and knows it will get worse the \r\nday America starts exploiting its take-over of Afghanistan by running \r\na pipeline southwards via Afghanistan from the giant southern Caspian \r\noil fields. Currently, that oil is piped northwards -- where Russia \r\nhas control. \r\n\r\nRussia is in the process of ramping up oil production with the \r\npossibility of trading some of it for euros and selling some to the \r\nUS itself. Russia already has enough problems with the fact that oil \r\nis traded in US dollars; if the US has control of Iraqi oil, it could \r\ndistort the market to Russia's enormous disadvantage. In addition, \r\nRussia has interests in Iraqi oil; an American take over could see \r\nthem lost. Already on its knees, Russia could be beggared before a \r\nmile of the Afghanistan pipeline is laid. \r\n\r\nANOTHER SOLUTION? \r\n\r\nThe scenario clarifies the seriousness of America's position and \r\nexplains its frantic drive for war. It also suggests that solutions \r\nother than war are possible. \r\n\r\nCould America agree to share the trading goodies by allowing Europe \r\nto have a negotiated part of it? Not very likely, but it is just \r\npossible Europe can stare down the USA and force such an outcome. \r\nTime will tell. What about Europe taking the statesmanlike, \r\nhumanitarian and long view, and withdrawing, leaving the oil to the \r\nUS, with appropriate safeguards for ordinary Iraqis and democracy in \r\nVenezuela? \r\n\r\nEurope might then be forced to adopt a smarter approach -- perhaps \r\naccelerating the development of alternative energy technologies which \r\nwould reduce the EU's reliance on oil for energy and produce goods it \r\ncould trade for euros -- shifting the world trade balance. \r\n\r\nNow that would be a very positive outcome for everyone. \r\n\r\n. . . . \r\n\r\nGeoffrey Heard is a Melbourne, Australia, writer on the environment, \r\nsustainability and human rights. \r\n. . . . \r\n\r\nGeoffrey Heard C 2003. The war has been constantly changing in its motivation from being about Saddam's violation of UN resolutions regarding the development of WMD, to the notion of Saddam being a threat to "America and its allies" to finally the "liberation" of the Iraqi people.\r\n\r\nThe "liberation" of Iraqi people is simply an unintended side-effect of a war that is being waged as a result of the American knee-jerk paranoial reaction to September 11th. In essence, the war is only being fought to increase the sense of security for insecure Americans in general. As clearly demonstrated though, it is only their "sense" of security that is being improved, not their real security.\r\n\r\nThe current administration however, would like it known that it is their immense compassion for the Iraqi people that has compelled them to fight this war. In reality, though, the notion of "liberation" was an attempt at winning world opinion.\r\n\r\nThe world was not fooled and did not easily buy into the slogan "Liberate Iraq" as did their American counterparts. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, if the war truly was first and foremost a war of liberation, one would wonder why the idea of "liberation" as motivation for the war did not become an official position until after the "State of the Union" speech. Only after world opinion had asserted its opposition to a war. \r\n\r\nBasically, the "liberation" idea was an attempt to gain support from liberals and people concerned with the well-being of people unlike themselves. However, those targetted could clearly see that it was simply an attempt by the Bush administration to gain "moral high ground" (of which one could easily say now that they didn't think they had) over the war opposition.\r\n\r\nI leave you all with one last thought:\r\n\r\nIf Saddam Hussein, and his current regime was not producing weapons of mass destruction, would Americans still be pushing to "liberate" the Iraqi people from his rule? \r\n\r\nI think not.\r\n\r\n\r\nSincerely,\r\n\r\nThe New X","author":"The New X","parent_id":40641,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-03-30 18:02:46","modified":"2003-03-30 18:02:46","fileurl":""},{"id":43784,"heading":"The New X","article":"Sorry, I did not actually realize that Fresca's post was not Fresca's post.\r\n\r\nSincerely\r\n\r\nThe New X","author":"The New X","parent_id":40641,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-03-30 18:04:40","modified":"2003-03-30 18:04:40","fileurl":""},{"id":43786,"heading":"The New X","article":"Sorry, I did not actually realize that Fresca's post was not Fresca's post.\r\n\r\nSincerely\r\n\r\nThe New X","author":"The New X","parent_id":40641,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-03-30 18:04:47","modified":"2003-03-30 18:04:47","fileurl":""},{"id":43787,"heading":"The New X","article":"That WAS my post, you nincompoop. Not one was written by anyone who has experienced war as a child.\r\nIn 1970, war erupted in a part of Pakistan referred to as East Pakistan. Some refer to the war as a war of independence while others call it a civil war. Ultimately, it really doesn’t matter what it is called; it was just a war.\r\nMy parents had served in this little country for 12 years when the war broke out. At the start, we lived in a tiny town in the southeastern portion of the country. One afternoon, my two older sisters, my brother, and I were playing in the back yard. My oldest sister and I notice two fighter jets flying low across the rice fields and coming towards our town. Soon we heard the noise of machine gun fire erupt from the planes as they started to strafe the town. It was Friday. Market day in this small, rural community. The jets had no problem finding human targets as they ripped through. We knew that the jets were assets of the Pakistani Air Force under the command of Ayub Khan, the governor-general.\r\nA short while after this attack, we moved to Dhaka, the capital of East Pakistan. My parents thought it would be safer and, if needed, would be the fastest route for an evacuation became necessary. I don’t recall how much time passed by between our arrival in Dhaka and the escalation of hostilities but my parents were soon faced with the decision of evacuation due to the closure of civil aviation and the border. My parents, along with my two older sisters, decided to remain in Dhaka to support the Bengali Christian community in this most desperate time.\r\nAs the war progressed, the Indian military became involved. They fought along side of the Bengali guerrillas against the Pakistani army and air force in an effort to liberate the Bengali people. India’s goal was not liberation of East Pakistan but the elimination of a strong adversary on its eastern border. However, that mattered little to the Bengali people who were struggling for their freedom.\r\nAs the war lead into its final stages, the Pakistani military was driven out of the countryside and into Dhaka. The Indian air force intensified their nightly raids and bombed the hell out of the city. Though they targeted the airport and the military cantonments, the bombs frequently struck civilian buildings and killed Bengalis. Our home was not very far from the airport and we could feel the bombs rip open their targets. We slept on the floor under tables in the hope of surviving damage to our house should a bomb strike nearby. We had no illusions of surviving a direct hit. In the final days, we experienced many a sleepless night as the ground trembled and the bomb blasts ripped through the city. There were many nights when we really didn’t believe we were going to survive.\r\nThe Pak army finally surrendered to Indian forces and Bangladesh was born. Bangladesh has been through some very tough times since 1971 but one thing is clear, Bangladesh is free of the likes of Ayub Khan. \r\nWhere was the UN when Ayub “Tikka” Khan killed demonstrators? Where was the UN when his troops executed professors and students from Dhaka University? Where was the UN when he had journalists and intellectuals rounded up, tortured, and shot? Where was the UN? They were sitting around talking about it. Talk is cheap unless you are willing to back it up with action. Go home, UN. Go home, so-called human shields. Go home, Voices in the Wilderness. Your talk is cheap.\r\n\r\n May God bless Bangladesh, a free Iraq, and the United States of America.\r\n","author":"Wade M","parent_id":40641,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-04-11 17:33:52","modified":"2003-04-11 17:33:52","fileurl":""},{"id":48608,"heading":"Wade:","article":"Very moving.\r\n\r\nGod bless you and your family.","author":"daveman","parent_id":40641,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2003-04-11 18:17:25","modified":"2003-04-11 18:17:25","fileurl":""},{"id":48616,"heading":"Human Shields?","article":"Collateral Damage? Why do peace protesters support Saddam? This is much different than the 60's. You actually want him to stay in power, don't you? Too bad the Iraqis don't want to keep him.
