While it's possible they were flooded by real users, it's also possible that they were hit by a cyber attack out of friendly neighborhood software programs in Virginia ;-)  Al-Jazeera themselves are best equipped to tell what's going on because they can look at their server logs.  Before you call the civil liberties folks, you should call Al-Jazeera and ask them to investigate.  But I've seen the site go down regularly in the last two days and it's definitely suspicious.
