In Murrieta tonight, we held a candlelight vigil that was, to the best of my knowledge, the first organized peace event in the valley between Elsinore and Temecula. A total of 72 people attended -- young and old; veterans; Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, Republicans; people of various faiths and beliefs; folks from Lake Elsinore, Hemet, Menifee, Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar; everyone united with a common cause: peace.

Organized in conjunction with MoveOn.org, our vigil was one of over 6000 vigils taking place across the world in 140 countries. Although the volunteer organizer who originally scheduled the vigil for the California Oaks Sports Park failed to materialize, we improvised our own vigil, with speakers, songs, prayers, and a moment of silence.

Your humble Inland Anti-Imperialist took photographs, and learned quickly that it's hard to take non-blurry pictures at night of moving light sources, but there were a few that came out well and they are included with this post. Representatives of the media, specifically the Californian local paper, were present as well.

Ted Pennings of the Temescal Canyon High School peace club suggested that we meet back again in one week for another vigil -- one which, sadly, looks to be a vigil to end the war rather than prevent it. Watch the Inland Anti-Empire site for updates, but plan to meet next Sunday, 23 March 2003, at Calif Oaks Sports Park again at 7:00 p.m.

The biggest lesson of the night is that we are not alone in our valley when we want peace. Together we are the moral strength of our nation, that believes that we can live in peace in this world, and which knows that war is not the way to do it.

In Murrieta tonight, we held a candlelight vigil that was, to the best of my knowledge, the first organized peace event in the valley between Elsinore and Temecula.
