These were not people who protested in the streets, but rather, stayed home and advocated no military action at all.  They were generally midwestern Republicans, not East Coast Democrats.\r\n\r\nMore significant was a leftist movement, many of them communists or socialists, who were ardently anti-fascist.  Even when our government forbade people to go and support the republican forces in Spain, many Americans went to join the international forces to fight fascism, and help restore the democratic republic in Spain.\r\n\r\nIt was democrats, leftists, and liberals versus the monarchist-church traditionalist alliance.
