\r\n\r\nWhen it comes to finding solutions to the many\r\nproblems facing our lives, His Holiness the Dalai\r\nLama's message, \"Change only takes place through\r\naction\", might very well have been the rallying call\r\nthat galvanized the millions of women throughout the\r\nworld to support the annual Breast Cancer Awareness\r\nmonth. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nEvery October since 1985, pink ribbons are displayed\r\nin posters, magazine advertisements, and proudly\r\nadorn women's lapels heralding Breast Cancer Awareness\r\nMonth. The multitudes of runs, hikes, walks, and\r\nother fund raising events raise hundred of millions of\r\ndollars to conquer that dreaded scourge of the modern\r\nwoman, breast cancer. High profile companies like\r\nAvon, Lee Denim and Revlon have joined ranks along\r\nwith the Susan G. Komen Foundation's \"Race for the\r\nCure\" and the City of Hope Hospital's \"Walk for\r\nHope\". Popular celebrities lead the charge. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nEach year 180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast\r\ncancer and 44,000 will die of the disease. The US has\r\none of the highest breast cancer rates in the world. \r\nFifty years ago the incidence of Breast Cancer for a\r\nwoman's life time risk was one in twenty. Now it has\r\nskyrocketed to one in eight. Clearly the so-called\r\nwar on cancer has not even made a dent in the breast\r\ncancer epidemic as the rates continue to climb at the\r\nrate of one per cent per year. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nThe motto of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is \"Early\r\nDetection is\r\nYour Best Protection\", since the National Cancer\r\nInstitute stated in 1995 that \"Breast cancer is simply\r\nnot a preventable disease\". A tune reiterated in 1997\r\nby the American Cancer Society who also announced that\r\n\"there are no practical ways to prevent breast cancer\r\n- only early detection.\" So mammograms are the front\r\nline of defense. Celebrities like Rosie O'Donnell\r\noffer free t-shirts with the honorable words \"I've\r\nbeen Squished\" if you'll make a date with your local\r\nx-ray department. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nSo let's all join in and wave our pink ribbons and don\r\nthose running shoes and take to the roads, right? \r\nWait! Before you get swept up by the emotional frenzy\r\nof this call to arms, there is something you should\r\nknow. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nBreast Cancer Awareness month's primary sponsor and\r\nmastermind of the event in 1985 was Zeneca\r\nPharmaceuticals, now known as AstraZeneca. Zeneca is\r\nthe company that manufactures the controversial and\r\nwidely prescribed breast cancer drug, Tamoxifen. Did\r\nyou know all TV, radio and print media campaigns are\r\npaid for and must be approved by Zeneca. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nIt is less known that Zeneca also makes herbicides and\r\nfungicides. One of their products, the organochlorine\r\npesticide Acetochlor, is implicated as a causal factor\r\nin breast cancer. It's Perry, Ohio chemical plant is\r\nthe third largest source of potential cancer-causing\r\npollution in the U.S., spewing 53,000 pounds of\r\nrecognized carcinogens into the air in 1996. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nWhen it comes to environmental toxicity and\r\ncarcinogens found in pesticides, herbicides, plastics\r\nand other toxic chemicals that are known to cause\r\ncancer - especially breast cancer - there is booming\r\nsilence by all Breast Cancer Awareness Month programs. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nDid the alarming increase of breast cancer rates just\r\nmysteriously happen? Or, perhaps, the focus on the\r\ncure has conveniently ignored the cause? After all,\r\nit wouldn't really be good PR for Zeneca to have it\r\nknown that their chemical products directly contribute\r\nto the breast cancer epidemic. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nMany experts predicted as far back as 30 years ago\r\nthat cancer rates would increase, citing an explosion\r\nof synthetic chemicals. From 1940 through the early\r\n1980's production of synthetic chemicals increased by\r\na factor of 350. Billions of tons of toxic substances\r\nthat never existed are now released into the\r\nenvironment. Yet only 3 percent of the 75,000\r\nchemicals in use have been tested for safety. These\r\ntoxic time bombs are found in our water, air and\r\nsoil. Women who live near toxic waste dumps have 6.5\r\ntimes the incidence of breast cancer. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nA survey conducted by Dr. Mary Wolff of Mt. Sinai\r\nHospital, New York found that women with breast\r\ncancer had four times the levels of DDE found in\r\nnon-carcinogenic tumors. Also, another study\r\ninvestigated why upper class women in the community\r\nof Newton, Massachusetts had higher breast cancer\r\nrates than the lower economic women. The researchers\r\nattributed the increase to greater use of\r\nprofessional lawn care service and more dry cleaning. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nThe pesticide - breast cancer link was stunningly\r\nhighlighted in research from Israel which linked three\r\norganochlorine pesticides detected in dairy products\r\nto an increase of 12 types of cancer in 10 different\r\nstrains of mice. After public outcry in 1978 the\r\nIsraeli government was forced to ban the pesticides\r\nBenzene Hexachloride, DDT, and Lindane. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nInterestingly, breast cancer mortality rates, which\r\nhad increased every year for 25 years, dropped nearly\r\n8 per cent for all age groups, and dropped more than a\r\nthirty three percent for women ages 25-34 in 1986. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nThe American Cancer Society was founded with the\r\nsupport of the\r\nRockefeller family in 1913. Members of the chemical\r\nand pharmaceutical industry have long had a place on\r\nits board. Could that have something to do with the\r\nfact that the American Cancer Society's latest report\r\non cancer prevention makes no mention of environmental\r\nfactors? <\/p>
\r\n\r\nPerhaps we can forgive Zeneca's involvement with\r\ncarcinogenic chemicals, since it researched and\r\npatented the most popular breast cancer treatment,\r\nTamoxifen, which grosses 500 million dollars a year. \r\nPerhaps not. On May 16, 2000 the New York Times\r\nreported that the National Institute for Environmental\r\nHealth Sciences listed substances that are known to\r\ncause cancer. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nTamoxifen was included in that list!! <\/p>
\r\n\r\nIt is known that Tamoxifen causes uterine cancer,\r\nliver cancer and gastro-intestinal cancer. After just\r\ntwo to three years of use, Tamoxifen will increase the\r\nincidence of uterine cancer by two to three times. \r\nThe treatment for uterine cancer is a hysterectomy. \r\nIn addition, Tamoxifen increased the risk of strokes,\r\nblood clots, eye damage, menopausal symptoms, and\r\ndepression. <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\r\nThe biggest shock of all is the fact that Tamoxifen\r\nwill increase the risk of breast cancer! <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\r\nThe journal Science published a study from Duke\r\nUniversity Medical Center in 1999 showing that after 2\r\n- 5 years, Tamoxifen actually initiated the growth of\r\nbreast cancer! <\/p>
\r\n\r\nSo, Zeneca, the originator of Breast Cancer Awareness\r\nmonth is the manufacturer of carcinogenic\r\npetrochemicals, carcinogenic pollutants and a breast\r\ncancer drug that causes at least four different types\r\nof cancer in women, including breast cancer. I ask\r\nyou to stop and think, <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\"Is something wrong with this picture?\"<\/p>
\r\n\r\nSo, since the Breast Cancer Awareness Month spin\r\ndoctors claim\r\nthat breast cancer is \"simply not a preventable\r\ndisease\", the focus has shifted to the theme of early\r\ndetection. Women are now encouraged to get their\r\nearly mammogram. At one time, only women 50 years or\r\nolder were told to get this screening. Now the\r\ncampaign is targeting 40 year olds and even women as\r\nyoung as 25. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nHowever, detecting breast cancer with mammography does\r\nnot protect women from breast cancer. More questions\r\nare being raised about the validity of mammograms. A\r\nmammogram is an , x-ray. The only acknowledged cause\r\nof cancer by the American Cancer Society is from\r\nradiation. When it comes to radiation, there is no\r\nsafe level of exposure. <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\"There is clear evidence that the breast, particularly\r\nin premenopausal women, is highly sensitive to \r\nradiation, with estimates of increased risk of up to\r\none percent for every RAD (radiation absorbed dose)\r\nunit of x-ray exposure. Even for low dosage exposure\r\nof two RADs or less, this exposure can add up quickly\r\nfor women having an annual mammography,\" notes Samuel\r\nEpstein, M.D., Professor of Occupational and\r\nEnvironmental Medicine at the University of Illinois\r\nSchool of Public Health. <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\"More recent concern comes from evidence that one\r\npercent of women, or over one million women in the\r\nUnited States alone, carry a gene that increases their\r\nbreast cancer risk from radiation fourfold.\"<\/p>
\r\n\r\nIn addition, mammography provides false tumor reports\r\nof between 5 and 15 percent of the time. False\r\npositive results cause women to be re-exposed to\r\nadditional X rays and create an environment of further\r\nstress, even possibly leading to unneeded surgery. <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\"Furthermore,\" says Dr. Epstein, \"while there is a\r\ngeneral consensus that mammography improves early\r\ncancer detection and survival in post-menopausal\r\nwomen, no such benefit is demonstrable for younger\r\nwomen.\" Still, the American Cancer Society recommends\r\nannual or biannual mammography for all women ages\r\nforty to fifty-five or earlier. <\/p>
\r\n\r\n\"Mammograms increase the risk for developing breast\r\ncancer and raise the risk of spreading or\r\nmetastasizing an existing growth,\" says Dr. Charles B.\r\nSimone, a former clinical associate in immunology and\r\npharmacology at the National Cancer Institute. Safer\r\nand even more effective diagnostic techniques like\r\ninfrared thermography have been vigorously attacked\r\nby the Breast Cancer Awareness organizations. It is\r\nalso noteworthy to point out that General Electric, a\r\nmajor polluter in PCB's in the Hudson River, N.Y.\r\narea, manufactures mammography machines. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nSo all the hullabaloo that comes each October,\r\nenlisting women's support and hard-earned cash, does\r\nnothing to really eliminate the cause of this\r\ndevastating disease. Instead, women's heart-felt\r\ndesires and good intentions to find the cause and cure\r\nare usurped by the hidden agendas of major\r\ntransnational corporations pushing their toxic drug\r\ntreatments and diagnostic tools that show to\r\ncontribute to even more breast cancer. It makes one\r\nwonder if the cancer establishment is really\r\ninterested in a cure at all. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nWomen can make a difference. The causes of cancer\r\nare already known. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nToxic diets, toxic lifestyles, toxic environments,\r\ntoxic drug treatments and toxic diagnostic techniques\r\ncause cancer. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nCorporations are only interested in increasing their\r\nprofits and ensuring their tentacles of control, not\r\nin actual solutions. <\/p>
\r\n\r\nWhen it comes to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women\r\nmust invest\r\ntheir time and money into projects, initiatives and\r\ntreatments that will truly make a difference. <\/p>
