Would someone mind telling me what US imperialism is, or imperialism in general? thanks

England in the 1800's gained control over far away lands... as did France, Germany, and other European powers.\r\n\r\nBut whay drives the imperial impulse? What makes a nation want to control another? That's where the answer becomes a bit more complicated.\r\n\r\nNationalism comes into play. Where one people think themselves superiour to another. Racism plays a part as well... since what we're talking about is the "developed world" (white) taking advantage of the "under-developed world" (non-white).\r\n\r\nUltimately, I think it's a question of markets. Capitalists can only sell so much of a given thing within the borders of their nation. They can also only acquire a certain amount of raw materials from within their nation (or through trade). In order to EXPAND their profits... they seek markets (and resources) that are outside of their country. Not only do they seek those markets, they work to control them.\r\n\r\nOil is the perfect example. Whoever controls the Oil, controls the economies of the entire world.
