The City of Long Beach and it's police department continues to intensify it's repression against the community with continuous brutality, murder, harassment, racial profiling, targeting and surveillance of activists.
In one of the most recent police encounters on Friday, June 28th, 2002, police detained a man face down on the sidewalk on Redondo and 3rd street in front of his house before pulling out their guns and pointing them to his head. The police questioned him about his involvement with the Long Beach Anarchist Infoshoppe (he has never been to the infoshoppe), and accused him of being an anarchist because of his black clothing.
On Jan. 19, 2002, at Fourth Street and Pine Avenue, Several Long Beach police officers surrounded Marcella Byrd, a 57-year-old African American woman. Police claim that Byrd, a diagnosed schizophrenic less than five feet tall, threatened them with a kitchen knife. They opened fire, hitting her with at least 10 bullets.
CONDEMN ATTACKS ON HOMELESS
On the weekend of April 14th, 2002, over 100 homeless people who regularly live in Long Beach and hang out in Lincoln park were rounded up in a police sweep to clean the city before the annual grand prix was to begin.
When Long Beach Food Not Bombs went to Lincoln park to serve the annual Sunday meal, they found an empty park with a police cruiser parked in the middle of it. When questioned as to why this police officer was parked in the middle of the park his response was "because I can"
On the corner of 15th and pacific, Food Not Bombs found a small group of their homeless comrades in a small park. They told Food Not Bombs the story of how nearly 100 homeless now rot in Long Beach jail for up to 60 days for the crime of being poor.
CONDEMN REPRESSION AGAINST ANARCHISTS AND ACTIVISTS
Police repression in Long Beach continues to intensify especially with the targeting of anarchists and activists. The City of Long Beach, and it's police department, is now at the forefront of a well-organized quasilegal conspiracy, in the cahoots with Los Angeles, La Habra, Fullerton, and the orange County and Los Angeles sheriffs departments and the FBI to destroy the growing anarchist movement in Southern California.
May Day 2001, the now infamous riot in the streets of Long Beach, was just the beginning of an outrageous war waged against anarchist movement. Approximately 100 demonstrators were brutally attacked and arrested in what turned out to be the worst case of police brutality in Long Beach in 33 years. The demonstrators attempted to peacefully march when only two minutes into the demonstration police began swinging their batons. The march didn't last more than 15 minutes before police opened fire with rubber bullets. With guns still drawn, one-by-one, everyone was arrested. Demonstrators suffered fractured arms from baton swings, and penetrating wounds from scatter-shot projectiles fired out of 12-Gauge shot guns. Robert Middaugn (aka "ruckus"), who was one of those arrested on mayday, was sentenced to 3 years in state prison. In order to coerce Ruckus into taking the plea the judge informed Ruckus that he would be facing 4 years just for his probation violation not to mention a possible 13 more if found guilty of the other charges. Ruckus was threatened with 17 years in prison. After taking the plea for 3 years in state prison, Ruckus found himself possibly facing a 3rd strike on a new charge that will give him another 20 years to life.
On April 20, 2002, Mathew Gordon Lamont, a Long Beach Anarchist, along with Maxwell Lucas, a Food Not Bombs Activist, were pulled over in the city of La Habra (Orange County) after being followed by 2 Long Beach detectives. While their car was pulled over for unknown reasons, it was searched by detectives who claimed to have found a gas can in the car. The two men were arrested and taken into custody.
Maxwell Lucas, who is a juvenile, was taken to the Orange County Juvenile Detention Center in Orange, CA. His charges were transportation of a destructive device. Maxwell Lucas is currently out of Juvenile Detention Center on house arrest.
Matthew Lamont is still being held in the Santa Ana Jail (550 Flower st). and is being charged with 4 felony charges which include possession of a destructive device, transporting of a destructive device, the use of a destructive device, and the possession of materials/instructions to make a destructive device. His bail is set at 0,000. Santa Ana sheriffs (in coordination with Long Beach authorities) continue to harass and follow supporters of Mathew Lamont at his court dates.
Hasan Hasan, a math instructor at Cerritos college and member of the Long Beach Peace Network, was illegally detained by the INS. Without being given any reason Hasan Hasan was both fired from his job and arrested within a matter of minutes. This was an obvious setup to target Hasan for his political beliefs. Hasan was facing deportation charges before being released on Bail. Hasan Hasan was then arrested once again on chumped up terrorist charges and to this day still remains in jail.
Political repression continues to intensify in Long Beach and Southern California around the anarchist movement. Excessive surveillance, profiling, fbi/secret service raids, arrests, and harassment has been experience by many local anarchists and activists, especially those associated with the Long Beach Infoshoppe. We've seen this happen in Eugene, and in the 60's with devastating results. We must not let this happen again. We must take immediate action to defend ourselves from this repression now otherwise it will be too late!
