I don't understand how this replicates the ruling classes.\r\n\r\nThe statement that wealth is powerless is ABSURD. To even argue that the two are entirely distinct is foolish, because one creates the other.\r\n\r\nRich powerful people may downplay their wealth for political purposes, like Bush does. They may downplay their power to appear more "above messy politics", like Bill Gates does. Do you believe either of these guys?\r\n\r\nAnd, the last point - that the schools are the tools of the powerful is obvious. Go to any private school for rich people, and the (sellout) teachers are saying things like "we have to teach these kids to be good, compassionate leaders, creative, open minded, etc.". \r\n\r\nMeanwhile, at an urban or largely nonwhite public school, kids are prevented from being creative, not pushed to excel academically, tracked into dead end service careers, and otherwise turned into drones. At best, they can hope to get a technical education to be part of the "elite" working classes of college educated drones, willing to defend the status quo, spewing libertarian blather about meritocracy.\r\n\r\nLiberals want the working classes to get that liberating curriculum that the rich get, but they don't get the bigger picture. The pedagogy of power rings hollow, when it's not backed up by real power.\r\n\r\nConservatives want the working classes to remain ignorant, and say "let's not get their hopes up". I guess the promise of poverty is someone's funny idea of "compassionate conservatism".\r\n\r\nFree your mind. Seize the power.","author":"pissed at power","parent_id":18149,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2002-08-03 20:50:41","modified":"2002-08-03 20:50:41","fileurl":""}]}
