Long Beach Police were aggressive and issued a later ruled unconstitutional dispersal order. Those who complied with the order were rounded up and arrested. Before the march had even started, Long Beach police had already planned to arrest every single one of the demonstrators.

The peaceful march ended with a violent police attack. Among many injuries, one journalist was shot in the back twelve times with the bullets, two of which imbedded. Another peaceful demonstrator was shot in the leg with a scatter-projectile fired from a 12-gauge shot gun which penetrated rubber bullets deep into his calf. Demonstrators suffered fractured arms from baton swings and bloody wounds from rubber bullets.

Because of the police repression, Sarah - a peaceful activist - was convicted of aiding the assembly and sentenced to six months.
