Included are

historical works produced as early as the 1960s, as

well as artworks inspired by the September 11 attacks

and their aftermath. Historically, the flag has been

used to express patriotism, encourage enlistment, and

criticize public policy. It can embrace the ideals on

which this country was founded, court controversy and

dissent, or achieve both simultaneously. Viewer

response is encouraged, and visitors will be invited

to fill out comment forms about the show and the role

of the flag in American society. Civil dissent at this

moment seems in jeopardy, because it has recently

been interpreted as a threat to democracy; in fact, it

has always been at the heart of promoting a free and

democratic society. In the interest of addressing the

issue of free speech, a public dialogue hosted by

Carol Wells, Executive Director of the Center for the

Study of Political Graphics, with Carol Sobel, First

Amendment specialist with the ACLU, will be held in

conjunction with the exhibition on June 15, from 2 to

4 PM.

Some of the artists included in the exhibition are:

Kim Abeles, Robert Aulicino, John Baldessari and

Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Tom Benton, Steve Bodzin, Gary

Brown, Nancy Buchanan, Dorit Cypis, Lou Danziger, Lex

Drewinski, Peter Dudar and Sally Marr, Ernest Pignon

Ernest, Flagging Spirits (Karl Baden, Leslie Ernst,

Marion Faller, Margaret Morton, Melissa Shook, Sally

Stein, Jim Stone, Margaret Wagner, Daniel Younger),

Colette Gaiter, Galia Goodman, Shalom Gorewitz, Josh

Gosfield, Vulfrano Gutierrez, Robbin Henderson, I.C.U.

Art In Creative Unity (ASYL'M, Man One, KOKO, RELIC),

Andrew Johnson, Jerry Kamstra, Corita Kent, James

Kodani, Ernest Larsen and Sherry Millner, Steven

Lyons, George Maciunas, Edith Marshall, Cynthia

Maughan, Karen and Paul McCarthy, Claude Moller,

Bill Olive, Tony Palladino, Nancy Parker, Sheila

Pinkel, Yvonne Rainer, Faith Ringgold, Erika

Rothenberg, Jos Sances, Dread Scott, Laura Silagi, Bill Springer,

Kat Skraba, Las Terminas (S.
