The goal is to raise a ton of money for this organization, which sounds like a cross between a trade union and a lobby group.

Their goals, in short:

- establish that recordings are not works for hire (which the record company owns) but works licensed to record companies.

- strict enforcement of copyright law. they are not pro-napster.

- record companies are taking songs online, into their own online retail services, without permission, and are paying far below what they should be paying.

- pass sb 1246. See

http:\/\/www.hitsdailydouble.com\/news\/newsPage.cgi?news03200<\/a>

for more information.

Quick analysis of these guys:

- this is the first lobby group for creatives in the music biz, an industry that's larger than film and video games. napster, hackers, and courtney love appear to have shaken musicians from their collective dank-induced haze, and maybe they'll vote or something this year.

- they aren't a fan's best friend, but they are more likely to side with the small guy than the record company.

- some individuals within the coalition are pro-file-trading.

- overall, this is a big push in the general direction of \"author's rights\" which assert that the first and last owner of a copyrighted work is the author. incidentally, this is the general position of the IMC on all work posted to this (and afaik all) website - the copyright is retained by the owner.

- so, if you wanted to see the shows, it's politically correct. it's not \"radical\" but it's consonant with the original spirit of copyright law (a legal invention that commodifies information).

- where the hell are the rappers? aside from a few geniuses in the rap game, i think most rappers are probably getting screwed.<\/p>\n","contact":"","link":"http:\/\/www.recordingartistscoalition.com\/","address":"","phone":"","parent_id":0,"mime_type":"text\/plain","summary":"Just a link to a site behind the \"Recording Artists' Coalition\" concerts happening this week, before the grammys.","numcomment":1,"fileurl":"\/uploads\/","filesize":null,"article_url":"\/news\/2002\/02\/15170.php"},"attachments":[],"comments":[{"id":15204,"heading":"Capitalism Has Destroyed the Music Industry!","article":"I took a music business class several years ago. I quickly learned that the capitalist system has destroyed music and art. Because of capitalist ways of ownership and money and all of that, the very few artists who are able to make a living making music are involved in a constant struggle to keep their income coming in, whether it be from the contracts they sign, the records they sell, the concerts they perform. There is always a struggle for the money from all parties involved -- musicians, producers, promoters, record company executives, etc. Instead of making music for the people and for the sake of art, these musicians seem to get more involved in making money for themselves, with the constant threat of losing their income being there.\r\n\r\nCapitalism has destroyed the arts and music! After all, shouldn't musicians be doing what they are doing because of their love of the art, and not to make more money? And shouldn't we all be able to enjoy the art they have created, rather than having it available only to the rich who can pay for CDs or pay for the rights to use the music themselves? Shouldn't artists be sharing their music rather than demanding payments for it every time someone else trys to enjoy it?","author":"Disillusioned former musician","parent_id":15170,"mime_type":"text\/plain","created":"2002-02-28 19:05:59","modified":"2002-02-28 19:19:33","fileurl":""}]}
