The Center for Reclaiming America, a religious right hate group, held their national conference in Newport Beach in the heart of Orange County on Saturday, April 28. 150 activists from Orange County, San Diego, and Los Angeles showed up to rally outside in opposition to the Center for Reclaiming America's message of racism, homophobia, and misogyny. One counter-protester materialized with a wooden board full of every anti-abortion bumper sticker that has ever been printed. Newport Beach police denied organizers the right to use a PA system or bullhorn, despite having paid for a permit. Activists used the bullhorn anyway, and people spoke for two hours. The rally was called by the Stonewall Initiative for Equal Rights, and organized by a coalition of many different progressive community groups. Speakers included people from the International Action Center, AIM, local GSAs, and Academia and Action.
