Southern\r\nPartisan: \"Setting the Record Straight\"<\/b>\r\n
Attorney\r\ngeneral nominee praised white supremacist magazine<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>

\"Your magazine also helps\r\nset the record straight. You've got a heritage of doing that, of defending\r\nSouthern patriots like [Gen.] Robert E. Lee, [Gen.] Stonewall Jackson and\r\n[Confederate President] Jefferson Davis. Traditionalists must do\r\nmore. I've got to do more. We've all got to stand up and speak in this\r\nrespect, or else we'll be taught that these people were giving their lives,\r\nsubscribing their sacred fortunes and their honor to some perverted agenda.\"<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>

When Attorney General\r\nnominee John Ashcroft praised the neo-Confederate magazine Southern Partisan,\r\nhe was endorsing a publication that defends slavery, white separatism,\r\napartheid and David Duke; a publication that celebrates the assassination\r\nof Abraham Lincoln, while delivering a \"mixed review\" of Lincoln's assassin\r\n(Southern Partisan, Second Quarter\/1990).<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>
Though Southern Partisan\r\nis the leading magazine of the neo-Confederate movement, it really\r\nis much more than a \"gumbo of racist apologias,\" as the New Republic put\r\nit last year (1\/31\/00). Southern Partisan's bigotry targets virtually\r\nanyone who isn't a straight white male neo-Confederate. Southern Partisan\r\npractices equal-opportunity bigotry. Here's a sample of opinion from the\r\nmagazine John Ashcroft says \"set[s] the record straight\":<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>
On Slavery<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>
\"Neither Jesus nor the\r\napostles nor the early church condemned slavery, despite countless opportunities\r\nto do so, and there is no indication that slavery is contrary to Christian\r\nethics or that any serious theologian before modern times ever thought\r\nit was.\"<\/b>\r\n

\"Slave owners . . . did\r\nnot have a practice of breaking up slave families. If anything, they encouraged\r\nstrong slave families to further the slaves' peace and happiness.\"<\/b>\r\n

The Spring 1984 issue\r\nrefers to \"the sinister Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln--an\r\ninvitation to the slaves to rise against their masters.\"<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>
On John Wilkes Booth:\r\n\"His behavior was not only sane, but sensible. His background, loyalties,\r\nbeliefs, and experiences had led him to that end.\"<\/b>\r\n

For years Southern Partisan\r\nhas celebrated the murder of Abraham Lincoln by selling T-shirts with Lincoln's\r\nimage over the words \"sic semper tyrannis\" (\"thus always to tyrants\")--\r\nJohn Wilkes Booth's cry just after shooting Lincoln. Timothy McVeigh was\r\nwearing this T-shirt when he was arrested for the Oklahoma City bombing.<\/b>\r\n

On the Klan<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>
The Ku Klux Klan's first\r\nGrand Wizard, Civil War Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, cited as evidence\r\nthat \"the Confederacy was full of super heroes.\"<\/b>\r\n

Praised former KKK Grand\r\nWizard David Duke as \"a candidate concerned about 'affirmative' discrimination,\r\nwelfare profligacy, the taxation holocaust ... a Populist spokesperson\r\nfor a recapturing of the American ideal.\"<\/b>\r\n

Until the late 1990s,\r\nBoyd Cathey was listed alongside Pat Buchanan as a senior advisor to Southern\r\nPartisan. As late as 1992, Cathey was an editorial advisor to The Journal\r\nof Historical Review, the leading journal of Holocaust denial.<\/b>\r\n

The public rely on media\r\nto expose cabinet nominees to tough scrutiny, but so far the mainstream\r\nmedia hasn't seriously taken up the question of whether Americans will\r\nbe well-served by an attorney general who sees Southern Partisan's bigotry\r\nand revisionist history as patriotic \"straight\" talk.<\/b><\/b>\r\n<\/p>
