Here are\r\nthe details (NY Times 11\/24\/00):<\/p>
\r\n\r\n The Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board's decision on Wednesday to\r\n shut down its hand recount of presidential election ballots followed\r\n a rapid campaign of public pressure that at least one of the board's\r\n three members says helped persuade him to vote to stop the counting.

\r\n\r\n Republican telephone banks had urged Republican voters in Miami to\r\n go to the Stephen P. Clark Government Center downtown to protest the\r\n recount, which began there on Monday and which Democrats hoped would\r\n help swing Florida's 25 electoral votes to Vice President Al Gore.

\r\n\r\n The city's most influential Spanish-language radio station, Radio\r\n Mambi, called on staunchly Republican Cuban-Americans to head down-\r\n town to demonstrate. Republican volunteers shouted into megaphones\r\n urging protest. A lawyer for the Republican Party helped stir ethnic\r\n passions by contending that the recount was biased against Hispanic\r\n voters.

\r\n\r\n ... Upstairs in the Clark center, several people were trampled,\r\n punched or kicked when protesters tried to rush the doors outside\r\n the office of the Miami-Dade supervisor of elections. ...

\r\n\r\n When the ruckus was over, the protesters had what they had wanted:\r\n a unanimous vote by the board to call off the hand counting. ...

\r\n\r\n Republican supporters scoffed at the accusation that they had\r\n engaged in a scheme of intimidation, saying the protest had been\r\n nothing more than a spontaneous manifestation of people's anger. ...

\r\n\r\n Evilio Cepero, a reporter for Radio Mambi ... phoned in interviews\r\n with two Republican lawmakers, United States Representatives Lincoln\r\n Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, both Cuban-Americans who also\r\n helped persuade people to come. <\/ul>\r\n\r\n\"Spontaneous manifestations of anger\" that far-right political parties\r\norganize to shut down democratic elections by means of telephone banks,\r\nbroadcast appeals, and inflammatory disinformation have a special name.\r\nThat name begins with \"f\", and it certainly represents a change in tone\r\nfor our country.
\r\n\r\n\r\nProtest Influenced Miami-Dade's Decision to Stop Recount
\r\n
