Rather than choosing to suppot someone who is as rich as the bottom half of the poorest people in this country, I've chosen to use Linux. I've never had it crash once in 11 months. It's too bad you guys choose to use RealAudio's proprietary format. \r\n\r\nPerhaps the convienience of its use outways the support its use gives to Microsoft. Perhaps it provides you with the, \"freedom to innovate\"\r\n\r\nSince you do though, perhaps you could provide a transcript for those of us who wish not to give Bill Gates our money. And they may have reason to be paralyzed \r\nby fear, given that the products of both MS and\r\nRealNetworks actively follow users around the net\r\nand gather profile information on them... not to \r\nmention the myriad security holes of the crappy \r\nbut dominant Operating System. Anyone peviously \r\nunaware of these realities should look up the \r\nbetter Boycott Microsoft sites, and also Linux \r\nsites\/groups\/lists.. with your best bet probably\r\nbeing your local Linux users group, where someone\r\ncan personally impress upon you the unacceptable\r\nnature of a Micro$oft-dominated existence. \r\nThat said, as a programmer from way back, I retain\r\na Win32 partition on my hard drive simply because \r\nit's unfortunately the defacto standard and there's\r\nso very many people developing for it.. as someone\r\nneeding to take part in this digital battle for the\r\nhardware on everyone's desktops, I like to know what\r\nwe're up against. I did pay for it, technically, as\r\na used hard drive which had a M$windows installation \r\non it. But of course I've not shelled anything out\r\nto the disturbing Corporation. It's an older release,\r\nwhich is actually preferable when it comes to analyzing\r\nwhat it's doing with my computer, and trying to keep \r\nall the security holes plugged up and whatnot-- because\r\nit's been around awhile, alot of freeware and shareware\r\nprogrammers have studied it carefully and put out some\r\ninteresting tools for it. \r\nThe reason for advocating that you get a RealAudio-\r\ncapable setup is again the regrettable reality that\r\nit has kind of emerged as a standard for streaming\r\nmedia. Video's kind of a failure with the internet now\r\nso congested with neophytes clicking on all kinds of \r\nstupid animated advertising, but radio stations every-\r\nwhere are recognizing that audio can be streamed pretty\r\nreliably, the result being that you can listen to programs\r\nfrom a plethora of college, community, and shortwave stations\r\n that become available once you have capability to plug into\r\nthe format owned by the crappy RealNetworks company. The\r\ngood news is that there is a high quality, free alternative\r\nstreaming protocol-- mp3. Winamp is the best player \r\n(www.winamp.com) and has Linux versions.\r\n\r\nAs for your particular situation, have you ever tried the \r\nLinux app which runs MSWindows stuff? Such emulation might\r\ncause too much of a CPU drain to carry out real-time audio\r\ndecompression, unfortunately. If you haven't, certainly \r\navail yourself of winamp. There are a couple realaudio\r\n\"plug-ins\" that contributing users have written for Winamp,\r\n(I've yet to try them out) but they're possibly too dated\r\nto deal with the latest Real format, \"G2\".\r\n\r\nYou're certainly right to criticize an entity as \r\niconoclastic as IMC for bending to the forces of \r\nmonopoly-minded technology. Mp3 streaming would have\r\nbeen the far better choice. And for non-live reports,\r\nsuch as the above one, encoding to a voice-quality mp3\r\nfile would be best, to be simply downloaded by the \r\naudience for listening on-demand from their own hard\r\ndrive. (In fact they should just save the Real .rm file\r\nfor downloading instead of streaming... the cheesy\r\nG2 standard kept switching quality levels while I was\r\nlistening to it due to varying levels of net congestion\r\nat the time.) But then again, another very unsatisfying\r\nfacet of IMC's output has been \"radio IMC\", (also using\r\nthe unfortunate RealNetworks protocol) which has been \r\ndominated by somebody-or-other's tastes in music CD's,\r\nwhen there's been probably a lot of spotlight on the \r\nsite and hence a priceless opportunity to educate and\r\nenergize folks with debates and background reports, in\r\naddition to the updates from the street. But really we\r\nhave no place to complain at this point, since we didn't\r\nget in there on the ground volunteering in the weeks\r\nof preparation, and should now restrict our feedback to\r\nexpressions of great THANKS for all the hard work, with\r\nhopes to continually improve and increase the quality\r\nmedia that IMC's are all about.\r\n\r\nIf staff could find time to post the .ra or .rm files \r\nas downloadable, I believe I have a tool capable of \r\nconverting to mp3, for re-posting at IMC or wherever.\r\nNo guarantee I'll have time to, but might as well try.\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----\r\n\r\nHooray for you, speaking out against the monopoly.\r\nIt's refreshing to see, because it seems that\r\ngenerally people dare not criticize the richest\r\ndweeb.
