SANTA CRUZ, CA — District Attorney Bob Lee has embarked on a full frontal assault against independent media in Santa Cruz by including four regular contributors to the independent news website Indybay.org amongst the eleven people charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors after the occupation of a vacant bank building on November 30th, 2011. District Attorney Lee apparently believes it is his duty to dictate how events such as the occupation of the vacant bank at 75 River Street should be reported on by the media, and if he does not approve of the coverage, then journalists risk the DA bringing charges against them.

The article which purports to name a company which makes kitchen equipment is the best example tonight. We cannot make kitchen equipment from APC's. This claim that they manufacture both was checked. 40 sites searched no results.

On the evening of Saturday, April 21, a day during which tens of thousands demonstrated against the FTAA in the streets of Quebec City, the Independent Media Center in Seattle was served with a sealed court order by two FBI agents and an agent of the US Secret Service. The terms of the sealed order prevented IMC volunteers from publicizing its terms; volunteers immediately began discussions with legal counsel to amend the order. This morning, April 27, Magistrate Judge Monica Benton issued an amended order, freeing us to discuss the situation without the threat of being held in contempt.

After months of preparation, members of the audio-activist group, Ultra-red emerge from the protests around the Democratic National Convention (DNC), held in Los Angeles August 14 to 17. Collaborating with guerrilla cartographers, the Independent Media Center's radio collective as well as assisting in organizing a queer rights march, Ultra-red members reflect on how a week of protests transformed the city from a militarized zone to a patchwork of sovereign public spaces.
Here is another anecdote from the 1996 anarchist Active Resistance conference. Plenty of other activist stuff happened that same week, in conjunction with the DNC convention. Stuff like the Independent Media Center movement and puppets at protest parades pretty much originated during this hot Chicago week in 1996.

The IMC, which occupies the 6th floor of the building, was informed of the threat around 5pm on Monday afternoon. The police have cordoned off the building's parking lot, which is preventing the IMC from broadcasting the satellite transmission of its daily live TV show, Crashing the Party. LAPD have also mentioned a possible evacuation of the building.
