August 17 was a hot Saturday. North East Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice (NELA Rad) set up their weekly protest, at Eagle Rock and Colorado Boulevards, at 2pm. They set out their signs, the standards: Pledge of Allegiance to the Earth, Afghanistan: Graveyard of Empires, and Peace is not simply the Absence of Violence... to name a few. While this group usually addresses what they refer to as “Peace through Justice, and all the related issues,” this weekend they were focused on “Global Warming, and all the related issues.”

The Time is Now to Support Carlos Montes, Beloved Chicano Activist (tags)
A very important trial is coming up this Tuesday in LA. There will be a large crowd of supporters outside the criminal court building at 8 am demanding justice for Carlos Montes. What justice would mean in this case is that the District Attorney Steve Cooley drops the charges against Carlos Montes, a beloved Chicano activist, before the trial even starts. If the trial does proceed, the jurors will hear many tall tales told to them by the prosecution. What they will see, however, with their own clear eyes is that Carlos Montes' house was raided nearly one year ago at 5am because of FBI political repression due to his years of activism.

This will be the 64th year that we are still unrecognized for our military service for America . Adding insult to injury, the removed the Filipino World War II veterans from the Enhanced American Veterans Benefits Law or the New GI Bill of 2008. Instead they gave the veterans a one time lump- sum- ( $ 15,000 to American citizens and $ 9,000 to Filipino citizens)—in essence - hush money for their “ human suffering for waiting for this lump sum” not a recognition of their war time service.
