A few weeks ago in Clovis, a young Native American woman was attacked by white supremacists. The police department seems to be doing nothing even though they reportedly have the license place number of the a car used by the attackers, and there has been no media coverage. Public Workers’ Struggle Is Our Struggle (tags)

Though it ended in a setback when the Republican majority in the Wisconsin state legislature used legally dubious tactics to ram the bill through anyway, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s plan to strip his state’s public workers of the right to form unions and bargain collectively has engendered nationwide resistance from America’s increasingly embattled working class. Tens of thousands of people from Wisconsin and elsewhere flooded Madison, the state capital, and occupied the capitol building to protest Walker’s policies, and the Democrats in the Wisconsin State Senate left the state for three weeks to deny Walker and the Republicans the votes they needed to eviscerate the state’s union movement. America’s working and middle classes need to stand strong and fight back in the face of these efforts by the corporate and radical Right to deny the non-rich any voice whatsoever in America’s politics.

The persecution of WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange (tags)

"The documents obtained by WikiLeaks—only a small fraction of which have been released so far—help expose what is a permanent conspiracy against the democratic rights of the world’s population: from covering up US bombings of civilians in Yemen, to working behind the scenes to obstruct the prosecution of CIA agents guilty of torture, to spying on UN officials in violation of international treaties. Those who are leading the campaign against WikiLeaks are themselves responsible for horrific atrocities. In the face of allegations from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that WikiLeaks had placed lives in danger, Assange gave an appropriate response in an interview with Time magazine. WikiLeaks, he noted, “has never caused an individual … to come to any sort of physical harm or to be wrongly imprisoned and so on. That is a record compared to the organizations that we are trying to expose who have literally been involved in the deaths of hundreds or thousands or, potentially over the course of many years, millions.”

In the Streets for Human Rights: A People Without Borders (tags)

The recent immigrant rights demonstration in San Diego May 1 was inspiring, but a real solution to the immigration question will come only when we can disenthrall the American people from hateful corporate propaganda that pits disadvantaged groups against each other and convinces millions of Americans that their economic and social problems are caused by people below them, not people above. So-called “illegal” immigrants are just another in the long line of scapegoats corporate and Right-wing propagandists invoke to keep people confused and lead them to challenge each other instead of their corporate overlords.

On MLK Day, NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE! (tags)

We, in the Filipino- American community and JFAV commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day or Kingdom Day in Los Angeles and all over the United States today, January 18th, 2010. It is several weeks to Feb 18, 2010, the 64th year of the Rescission Act of 1946 when the US congress stripped the Filipino veterans their rights and benefits as American veterans. This will be the 64th year that we are still unrecognized for our military service for America . Adding insult to injury, the removed the Filipino World War II veterans from the Enhanced American Veterans Benefits Law or the New GI Bill of 2008. Instead they gave the veterans a one time lump- sum- ( $ 15,000 to American citizens and $ 9,000 to Filipino citizens)—in essence - hush money for their “ human suffering for waiting for this lump sum” not a recognition of their war time service.

Prop. 8 and the Triumph of Theocracy (tags)

The passage of Proposition 8 proves that many American voters are committed to a basically theocratic view of government in which THEIR moral values and commitments should rule over others. In addition, the claim of 20-25,000 people seems to us to be (unfortunately) wishful thinking. We note that the rally at the church was confined by police to one full city block, and the number of people assembled in the Park before the march arrived was a similar number. We ask all contributors to LA Indymedia to please clearly indicate any and all quotes from other sources, and be realistic in your crowd estimates. Thank you.]

Immigrants and their advocated returned to the streets for the first time since May Day with Latino elected officials in tow, escorted by the LAPD who piggy backed for “public relations” during the march/rally to erase police brutality. More than 25,000 immigrant rights activists marched Thursday to Macarthur Park to again call for a path to citizenship for the nation's 12 million illegal immigrants. The Filipino contingent led by the Pilipino Workers Center and the AJLPP attended by scores of youth activists was very prominent in the march waving Filipino flags and charting MAKIBAKA, HUWAG MATAKOT! . Waving Mexican, Salvadorian, Honduran, Filipino and American flags and signs reading "No to Deportation," and calling for genuine legalization, about 25,000 marchers gathered about 6 p.m. for a brief rally in front of Immanuel Presbyterian Church on Wilshire Boulevard before heading to the park several blocks away.

Immigrants Are Lost In American Politics (tags)

Over the past 25 years Americans have enjoyed the benefits of immigrants for cheap labor; now the Washington leadership, that has relaxed enforcement and has permitted over twelve million immigrants to establish residency in the United States, is now reversing direction because cheaper labor is now in abundance in Asia. Washington is acting to protect the interest of corporate America, however there are many ramifications, families that are now part of the American fabric, working with us, living with us and are now part of our society.

Propaganda on “New Foreign Aid” – (tags)

At the height of the emotional issue on immigration and the Great American Boycott mass actions nationwide, The Los Angeles Times ran a five-part series entitled, “New Foreign Aid.” The series of feature articles ran from April 16, 2006 before the May 1, and featured the Philippines, Mexico, Haiti and other countries which send thousands of immigrant workers to the United States every year.We condemn such propaganda being peddled as “objective reporting.” Such allusions have no place in a society that purports to be democratic and free of racial bias. Such racist notions must be criticized and exposed roundly for what they truly are: worthless

The implications of the immigrant demonstrations for the class struggle in America (tags)

The demonstrations, strikes and boycotts by immigrant workers in cities across the United States are an indication of a sharpening of the class struggle, both in the US and internationally. Literally millions took to the streets May 1 in cities from Los Angeles to New York, Miami to Seattle and scores of towns in between. This mass protest movement, which has been building since March, is without precedent in both its size and its national scope.

Thousands of them joined the boycott or just watched and wildly cheered from the sidelines flying the American flags as the Filipino contingents marched by.

Arctic Wildlife Refuge, Los Angeles and Peak Oil (tags)

What's the connection between the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Los Angeles? The answer is peak oil. President Bush wants to open up ANWR (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) to oil drilling and it has everything to do with the fact that we are at the global peak in oil extraction. Peak oil is the start of the age of ever declining oil extraction. This is very significant to Los Angeles because it could be argued that Los Angeles is one of the most oil-addicted places on earth - the birthplace of freeway suburbs, and home to thousands of big-box stores which carry products that traveled thousands of miles to reach us. In the article below, Kenneth Deffeyes brings to our attention the fact that the debate over ANWR is missing the big issue, the issue of peak oil. On April 10th in Venice, the Post Carbon Institute presents Options and Actions for a Post Carbon Los Angeles, with local community activists presenting projects addressing these issues.

Eyes Wide Open at Arlington West (tags)

Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee’s widely-acclaimed exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War joined Arlington West last Sunday. Each and every Sunday since February 15th 2004, this memorial is set up on the sand just north of the pier at Santa Monica Beach. We've been putting up this memorial as a way to acknowledge the costs and consequences of the addiction to war as an instrument of international policy. Similar to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., we've a weekly updated placard listing all the fallen American military personnel since the U.S. invaded and occupied Iraq to the present day. People read the names, ages, rank, hometown and circumstance of death, write their name on a piece of paper along with any thoughts or sentiments and attach this to any cross along with a flower. In addition, we've also a sign to acknowledge the fact that if we were to put up a cross for each Iraqi person killed the numbers of crosses would fill the entire beach. As we have no way of knowing the various faiths or philosophies of the many who have sacrificed their lives fighting for their illusions, the simplicity of a cross is used as a marker. Arlington West is a place to mourn, reflect, contemplate, grieve, and meditate, and to honor and acknowledge those who've lost their lives and to reflect upon the true cost of war.
