KPFK & Pacifica's Archives seem oddly silent about transitions. Any ? (tags)

Has anyone else heard what is happening to Pacifica’s [5 station’s] Archives ? Or what is planned, hoped for, funded or transitioning there ? Those treasures and no-where-else-held audio files contains so many years of very valuable recordings - much transferred from audio-tapes, CD’s or big huge tape reels, to sell, share or make available to the Public. We, the Public, all who have donated, paid, and volunteered there too. And more that needs to be transferred on to more modern technological resources that has to still be done. And who has tried to UPDATE what is happening or has happened [since early 2000’s] on WIKIPEDIA ? Anyone ? No one? No one cares to do this free work, if allowed by Wikipedia editors ?

KPFK is going topsy-turvy, still, with employees and unions (tags)

KPFK is drowning in employee-union problems with emails flying from programmers affected and some untangling of what is actually occuring hard to comprehend. But here are excerpts from an informatory website that regularly offers some answers as no one else can, it seems.

The Pacifica Radio Network and "local control" (tags)

SaveKPFA are the majority caucus on the elected KPFA Local Station Board (LSB). Their delegates to the Pacifica National Board (PNB) are also in the majority there. "Local control" has always been a main plank of their platform, but in February, the PNB cast a vote that seemed to institutionalize the exact opposite.

KPFK is integral part of Pacifica, going broke ? (tags)

KPFK says it is going to do another whiney begfest for more $$$ tomorrow, with claims they did not get enough money during the extra long fund raising they barely just completed. Could it also be due to these also secret non-transparent doings at Pacifica, which KPFK also is run by and where KPFK payors also pays for 'belonging' ....and thus we too seem to be crazily represented in -Pacifica and all the PNB members decide or decry - as also by some of KPFK's own LSB members are PNB members too ? what is going on anyhow? Can our LA local radio station continue on at all ? or is it being set up to be sold off, the building sold for cold cash and then ? dead air ? all gone ? money down that radio drain ?

KPFK is an integral part of Pacifica... problems infect our LA station. (tags)

KPFK is an integral part of Pacifica... problems infect our LA station. Indymedia appears to be the only site where updates and iinformation-sharing on what is happening on extentions of what is OUR RADIO station - paid for by subscribers/ stakeholders ! - KPFK. The dearth of access, transparency and discussion in LA anywhere on line speaks to the secrecy and denial with impunity that is occuring daily in our radio sphere, while demanding more and more $$$$ from us ...or else.. here is more to learn, ask, share and perhaps even to get involved in any ways possible - including attending the confict-full, argumentative, and uncourteous harrangues at the Local Station Board on March 22, 1 pm in WLA   See KPFK.org for details, under 'events'.

An Open Letter To Sonali Kolhatkar, Host Of Uprising On KPFK (tags)

Pacifica management and KPFK and KPFA's manager Richard Pirodsky has enlisted KPFK host Sonali Kolhtatkar to support the cancellation of the Morning MIx locally produced community radio shows on KPFA so she can have a drive time slot. This has brought a torrent of anger of listeners and supporters of KPFA in Norther California and many are calling on Kolhatkar to abandon her plans to support the removal of KPFA local community programming on prime time. The newly appointed executive director Bernard Duncan was brought in by Pacifica Board Chair Margy Wilkinson despite the fact that he was discharged from KPFK for financial malfeasance. This was also supported by Dan Siegel and his law firm which is backing the cancellation of local community programming.

Bernard Duncan, prior GM of KPFK is still in play (tags)

Strange sightings are occurring…here in LA we have been told that the recent Gen’l Mgr of KPFK had resigned months before his contract was up in June, and left the station in March 2014 instead, with the KPFA Berkeley manager coming in as interim manager here. Now Bernard Duncan’s name has reappeared in some other suspicious circumstances that most of those who are KPFK sponsors/ subscribers/ members/ payers Do Not Understand, and Have Not Been Informed…at all ! Why is there no local transparency or an LA Town Hall meeting to explain, to hear and ask questions - and even if answers are not accurate or easy, for there to be available Discussion, Exposure, Information -vs silence and secrecy – yes, here where KPFK still exists and plays on air ...as if nothing else were going on behind some closed hallowed doors - secretly....unknown to us. We have no say, of course, no power, no input, no nutin but pay and wonder and worry. who are the players here and what are they doing ? in secret alliances ?

Pacifica Radio, Rwanda, and DR Congo (tags)

As the stand-off at the Pacifica Radio Foundation offices in Berkeley continues, I have to ask myself why Pacifica matters. Is it worth such a constant struggle? One reason I answer yes is the truth that makes its way onto Pacifica airwaves about Rwanda, DR Congo, the whole Great Lakes Region of Africa, and the US/Pentagon responsibility for the most lethal conflict since World War II. News reports about this are not consistent across the network, or across the broadcasts of different stations, but some of Pacifica's reporting on this fulfills its oft repeated claim to bring you news that no one else will. This is one example: the voice of Keith Harmon Snow, included in this 02.12.2014 KPFK report, is heard on RT and Press TV, but certainly not on NPR, or any major TV network outlet in the U.S. or Canada.

Veteran Chicano activist's home raided by agencies (tags)

A veteran Los Angeles Chicano activist is speaking out today after what he says was a joint Sheriff’s Department and FBI raid on his Alhambra home on Tuesday morning. Carlos Montes is one of the original Brown Berets who was a key leader of the Chicano Power movement of the 1960’s and 1970s. He says his current activism in the immigrant rights and international workers solidarity movement has put him back in the crosshairs of federal agents. Montes was arrested in his home during a pre-dawn raid in which authorities confiscated countless photos, documents and even two kaffiyehs. He says the authorities have charged him with illegal possession of a firearm. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce visited Montes at his home today. He files this report from Los Angeles.

Complete Interview Transcript with Richard Falk from May 31st 2010 (tags)

DB "The Israelis say that these commandos who they say were armed with hand guns and paint guns were only defending themselves from armed and dangerous attacks by people on the boat. Your response to that? RF: There are two lines of response, and this is an area where the facts are contested and difficult to disentangle at this stage. The witnesses on the boats themselves, particularly the Turkish boats where most of the violence took place, claim that the commandos landed shooting, and that it was only after the initiation of that violence that there was some attempt at defense on the basis of very contrived and primitive weapons, as opposed to the kind of weaponry that the Israeli commandos were carrying. Beyond that, it’s fairly clear if unlawful attack of a vessel on the high seas is occurring, the passengers on that ship have some sort of right to self defense. So that’s one aspect of it. The second aspect is that even if there was some kind of defensive violence on the ship, that’s no excuse for an unprovoked attack carried out in this manner. If Israel didn’t want the ships to go to Gaza, they could have diverted them, and if they did what the other boats did in the Freedom Flotilla, except for the larger Turkish one, it seems pretty clear that this was a deliberate attack designed, I suppose, to punish the effort to carry out this humanitarian mission, which would obviously have disclosed the brutality of the blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has gone on now for almost three years. The Israeli arguments are not really seriously plausible. Given the overall circumstances it’s very difficult to give them any kind of serious credibility, and this seems to me to be as clear a violation of international humanitarian law, international law of the seas, and international criminal law, as we’re likely to see in the early part of the twenty-first century." Dr. Helen Caldicott Speaks in San Diego (tags)

Dr. Helen Caldicott, a powerful international activist against nuclear weapons and nuclear power for over a quarter-century, spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in San Diego October 23 and painted a picture of global warming as an imminent apocalypse that requires immediate action to develop alternative energy sources and stop using fossil fuels. She also denounced the public-relations campaigns aimed at convincing people that global warming isn't a threat, and said climate-change deniers like Rush Limbaugh directly threaten the survival of the earth and therefore should not be allowed to broadcast.

Pacifica’s Current Board Structure is Destroying the Network (tags)

Carol Spooner's finger-wagging review of the current state of Planet Pacifica ignores the crushing impact of the new 122-member National Board structure. Top-heavy, hugely expensive, conflict-ridden and racially polarized, this five-year old Board system was instituted to assure greater democracy and prevent the corporatization of Pacifica. But instead of protecting Pacifica, the new governance structure is destroying Pacifica. Itʼs bred factionalism, dysfunction, self-dealing, a plethora of litigation and staff purges network-wide.

Fletcher Rallies Progressive Crowd to Fight the Right (tags)

The leaflet advertising author and former labor educator Bill Fletcher's talk September 13 in Balboa Park promised a considerably more optimistic speech than the one he actually gave. Stunned by the mass demonstration in Washington, D.C. by radical-Right opponents of President Obama's supposedly "socialist" agenda, Fletcher gave a strongly worded warning to his Leftist audience that unless the American Left organizes now, not only to fight the Right but to appeal to the hearts and minds of ordinary Americans, the movement he called "Right-wing populism" — talk radio, Fox news, the "teabag" protests and the thug-like disruption of Congressmembers' town-hall meetings on health reform — will sweep the country and consign all progressive movements and any part of distributive justice and a social-welfare state to oblivion.

New Blackwater Controversy on the U.S.-Mexico Border (tags)

A proposed project run by the private military contractor Blackwater Worldwide is once again kicking up political hay on the US-Mexico border. Earlier rebuffed in its attempt to open a large training camp in the rural San Diego County community of Potrero, Blackwater now finds itself in a battle over the company's bid to open a training facility for the US Navy. Like Potrero, the latest controversy has pried open a Pandora's Box of thorny issues ranging from border relations to the Iraq war. The current dispute centers on Blackwater's plans to manage a 48-student school in San Diego County's Otay Mesa on the US-Mexico border and just down the road from US Border Patrol offices. According to Blackwater's plans, the site will offer indoor shooting instruction and simulated ship training to improve the anti-terrorist skills of naval personnel.

May Day Strike Against the War Shuts Down All U.S. West Coast Ports (tags)

On May 1, every port on the West Coast of the United States was shut down to demand an end to the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The historic May Day walkout by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is the first time ever that an American union has struck against a U.S. war. The union ranks defied the rulings of an arbitrator, who twice ordered them to go to work. They overcame the capitulations of the ILWU leadership, which didn't want the work stoppage in the first place, tried to water it down and cowered before the threats of legal action while waving the flag. The employers' Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) declared the May 1 port shutdown an "illegal strike." But after all the huffing and puffing from the bosses' mouthpieces, the dock workers pointed the way to defeating the imperialist war by mobilizing working-class power. In the end, it was more than a work stoppage. The dock workers' May Day strike against the war was a first step, a show of what it will take to bring down the warmongers in Washington. Their "symbolic" action was felt all the way to Iraq, where dock workers in two ports stopped work in solidarity with the ILWU. But it was only a beginning. What is needed is not only industrial action but a political offensive against the Democrats and Republicans, the partner parties of American imperialism, to build a class-struggle workers party.

Statement opposing anti-China campaign (tags)

We are opposed to the campaign of disinformation and demonization that is targeting the People’s Republic of China (PRC.) The timing of the campaign is linked to China’s hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympics. That the Olympics are taking place in China is of historic significance and great pride to all the country’s people. It was less than six decades ago that China emerged from a century of colonialist humiliation at the hands of the same big powers that are spearheading the China-bashing campaign today. Washington is providing financial, political, diplomatic and propaganda support to the racist demonization effort, supposedly because of concern for “human rights.” This is the same government that is directly responsible for the death of one million Iraqis since 2003. While one out of every three Iraqis have been killed, wounded or displaced since 2003 the US government is eager to have people in the US., especially students, protest any government other than their own. One pretext for the anti-China campaign is the fact that the PRC has trade relations with Sudan. The US wants to overthrow the government of oil-rich Sudan and replace it with a puppet. It has supported “rebel groups” who are prolonging the civil war. The people of the Sudan, who are suffering greatly, are cynically used as a fund raising vehicle by organizations that have raised tens of millions of dollars but have never spent a penny actually helping the people of Sudan, including those who live in the Darfur region.

"Accuracy in Media" Validates Goering's Axiom (tags)

Why, of course, the people don't want war...But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship

[Democratic] voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." --- Hermann Goering

The Fix is In - American Media Ignore Downing Street Memo (tags)

Over the last month, the American media has studiously avoided a story that has dominated the rest of the world. A leak transcript of a meeting with the British Prime Minister well before the invasion of Iraq showed that the US had decided to go to war even though it had no proof of weapons of mass destruction. Mainstream media argue that there is no news, that the American people already knew that the Bush admistration was mistaken. Conservative talk show hosts continue to deny that there are any problems. In a small, cramped room in the Capitol, Cong. Conyers held hearings on the Downing Street Memo. Ralph Nader, the Green Party and Rep. Maurice Hinchey call for impeachment.

A post-election headline from the Akron Beacon Journal cites a critical report by twelve prominent social scientists and statisticians, reporting: "Analysis Points to Election ‘Corruption': Group Says Chance of Exit Polls Being So Wrong in '04 Vote is One-in-959,000." Citing "Ohio's Odd Numbers," investigative reporter Christopher Hitchens, a Bush supporter, says in Vanity Fair: "Given what happened in that key state on Election Day 2004, both democracy and common sense cry out for a court-ordered inspection of its new voting machines."

Amy Goodman's 'Empire' (tags)

Amy Goodman didn't know if anyone was listening. It was the morning of September 11, 2001, and the host of the muckraking radio news program Democracy Now! was broadcasting from her studio in a converted firehouse just blocks from the World Trade Center. She was hunched over her microphone, intent on painting an audio portrait of the "horrific scene of explosions and fires," but the truth was she didn't know if anyone could hear her.

Many people in the KPFA listener community in the San Francisco Bay Area have asked me, Joseph Anderson, for a copy of my UC Berkeley "Daily Californian" newspaper guest column on Pacifica Radio's KPFA character Larry Bensky. At the time of its original publication, I knew nothing about Bensky other than how he came across on the air. I guess it is time for a confirming retrospective. Bensky hasn't changed a bit. This was written during the Pacifica Radio crisis of 1999, when Bensky was fired (thanks to *me*, now it can be told!). I immediately notified and talked to Mary Berry, then, about his insubordination and symbolically offered to let her have Bensky in exchange for Pacifica Radio back. But, it was still nice to have someone Black shut *Bensky* up!

Nazi Influences on the Anti-Communist Delusions of the Cold War (tags)

Pacifica Radio's Larry Bensky recently ridiculed a caller who asked a question about possible Nazi influences on the anti-communist hysteria of the 1950s. Bensky was apparently unaware that McCarthy travelled with old guard Nazis and fascists in the intelligence community, and the hysteria was their group effort, despite the uninformed denials of "alternative" media figures who should know better.

Sorry for re-posting corporate media here, but I think it's important for this to be accessible on the LA-IMC newswire for posterity's sake.
