Recently in addressing the issue of withdrawing troops from Iraq President Obama discussed the idea that to do so was honoring the troops that made so many sacrifices there. He discussed the idea that ending our mission there was the right thing to do. He essentially asserted that by ending the conflicts there and focusing on our home front that we as a nation were behaving honorably. He discussed honoring the Bush timeline as the right thing to do, though he didn't necessarily use those words.

About 100 activists, college students, and community members gathered yesterday for the anarchist activist conference at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. The conference was titled "The Resistance is Not Silent," and topics of discussion included the environment, the internet, immigrant rights, urban planning, poetry, bicycling, the anti-war anti-hunger network of collectives Food not Bombs, and non-violence. The event also included vegan food, music, and tables where vendors accepted donations for literature and t-shirts.

The Justice for Filipino Veterans (JFAV) expressed dismay that the equity bill was not discussed last Wednesday, June 25. Instead, the legislative visit or the lobby by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took precedence in the House of Representatives. She awarded the "order of the golden" heart in behalf of her government for US representatives even if the US lower house did not act upon the bill and discussed it on the floor. The information received from the veterans lobby group in Washington DC, the American Coalition of Filipino Veterans (ACFV) said the bill will a chance to be voted on the floor on Wednesday, June 25. But it was not the case.

The 2008 Immigration Forum called “Preparing the Fields to Plant the Seeds” was held last Saturday, January 26, 2008 from 12: 00 to 5:00 PM at the Mission Presbyterian Church at 3261 23rd St. in downtown San Francisco, CA. The immigration forum discussed the Dream Act, the Sanctuary Movement, the Kennedy-McCain Proposals and anti-immigrant bashing in the United States. They also discussed the roots and causes of imm9gration. The forum was sponsored by the Faith in the Movement Coalition (FMC) composed by Manos Unidas Community Center of the Mission, Alliance For A Just and Lasting Peace (AJLPP), Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) Damayan New York-New Jersey, Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, JAC of the Presbyterian Church of the USA, KM Pro People Youth, Grace Urban Ministries and the Mission Presbyterian Church.

Not least, the Movement for a Democratic Society (MDS) held its first national convergence at Loyola University, from November 8 through 11 with the participation of the newly inspired SDS, Students for a Democratic Society.

Former Catholic Nun Talks of War and Immigration at Seattle Baptist Church (tags)

guest speaker, Sister Florchita Bautista discussed her reflections at the University Baptist Church before an audience of fifty people last Sunday, August 5. Bautista cited the cases of human rights violations in the Philippines, specifically, stories of the grade three pupil Grecil who was shot by military men and was even accused of being a member of the rebel group New People’s Army, and that of Alice, the wife of Dr. Chandu Claver whose family is in Canada now seeking political asylum. Alice got eight bullets from the military operatives in Kalinga, northern part of the Philippines. Like many activists, Alice before her death was very active with progressive organizations that are fighting for the rights of the indigenous people over their ancestral lands and was critical of the corrupt policies of the government.
