he ALLIANCE NEWS reported today, on the 70th year of Bataan Day, that Sergeant Dominador Figuracion, 92, begged off from talking about the Fall of Bataan to the Japanese Imperial Army on April 9, 1942, and how he and some 70,000 Filipino and American soldiers had been forced to march to a concentration camp in Tarlac. Around 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers perished during the Death March. About 26,000 of the 50,000 Filipino prisoners of war at Camp O’Donnell in Tarlac died of dengue, malaria, dysentery or starvation when this was closed in January 1943, according to historical accounts.

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club supported the city's corrupt political establishment and its handmaidens in organized labor and refused to support progressive Democrat Mike Aguirre for re-election as city attorney. Instead they endorsed moderate Democrat City Councilemmber Scott Peters even though Peters voted to renew the Boy Scouts of America's sweetheart lease on city land in 2001 and refused to commit to backing Aguirre in a general election against a Republican.

Jim Gieson (right), winner of the Boy Scouts of America's Eagle badge in 1981 and Youth Leadership in America award in 1983, resigned both awards August 19, 2001 in protest against the Scouts' continuing exclusion of Gay leaders and members. Howard Menzer (center), president of San Diego Scouting for All, also resigned his Eagle badge. Mick Rabin (left) had given his up for similar reasons in May 2000.
Over 125 Rally Against Boy Scouts in Balboa Park (tags)
Over 125 local activists rallied in Balboa Park Sunday, August 19 to demand that the city stop supporting the anti-Queer, anti-atheist Boy Scouts of America by giving them 18.5 acres of city parkland for a nominal $1 per year. The Scouts' leases expire in 2007 and 2008, but the Scouts and their supporters on the current City Council want to renew them now.
