RIVERSIDE (California) - Police arrested a woman for observing a checkpoint Friday evening. The community responded in protest, occupying the area in front of Robert Presley Detention Center overnight, marching, and demanding the release of our comrade. The woman was released to the hospital at approximately eight o'clock Saturday morning, despite having suffered an epileptic seizure some nine hours earlier.

RIVERSIDE (CA) - Several hundred people participated in a series of actions marking International Worker's Day in Southern California's Inland Empire. The day featured an Occupy bank protest, an immigrant rights march and rally, and a food and clothing giveaway hosted by an autonomous grouping. The day of community empowerment was temporarily disrupted, however, when police violently targeted students and arrested them.

Walking through the main st. mall adjacent to the mission inn with men and woman in suits meeting for business lunches all seemed to be normal. However Refund California Coalition an economic justice organization, paired with group of UCR students and Occupy Riverside organizers, began to setup signs and a microphone with the Gandhi statue overlooking. People in the mall began to turn their heads in curiosity, the conversation had started.

EASTVALE, California - Nearly 300 people arrived at six in the morning in this desolate inland city with the intent to shut down the world's largest distribution center for Walmart goods. Activists from Occupy Riverside, Occupy LA, other Southern California occupys, community activists, and student groups arrived at the Schneider warehouse only to find that the management had closed the facility of its own accord. Having tasted victory at dawn, the group soon set its sights much higher.

RIVERSIDE (CA) - On the two-year anniversary of the US Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case, Occupy Redlands staged a protest outside the federal bankruptcy court near downtown Riverside, just a few blocks from the former encampment of Occupy Riverside. Citizens removed limits on corporate campaign contributions to individual candidates, branding the money as "free speech." The ruling, and the sense that it helped to cement that the corporations are in control of the political system, was a strong motivating factor for many middle class people who formerly felt franchised to join the occupy movement. Once supporters from Occupy Riverside arrived, about 30 people were present on the corner outside the court.

RIVERSIDE (CA) - Thousands of students, workers, and community members gathered to participate in the governance of the UC system. When their participation was limited and ultimately shut off, they took direct action to ensure their voices were heard. For this, they were confronted by police from numerous agencies. The murder caused an outcry, particularly among the city's black community, and led to some of the most militant and long-reaching organizaing the region had seen in years, including a shutdown of the 91 freeway and the establishment of numerous bureaucratic apparatuses put in place to prevent such tragedies.

RIVERSIDE, California - In Southern California's largest antifascist action in recent memory, a diverse group of between 400 and 500 protesters held a demonstration against a group of 16 neo-Nazis from the National Socialist Movement in the Casa Blanca barrio of Riverside. The NSM sought to target the day laborers who congregate outside the Home Depot at the corner of Indiana and Madison to exercise their right to free speech and look for work, but the community denied them any opportunity to put their genocidal ideology into practice. Despite efforts to contain the throng to sidewalks behind metal barriers, thrice the activists pushed forth their demands by taking over the street--in outright defiance not only of the police, who numbered well over 50, but also of protest organizers' pre-established rules of conduct. The day saw two arrests of anti-Nazi demonstrators criminalized for defending their community, and several activists reported being pushed and struck by police batons.

The increased pressure on USBP agents has already resulted in raids on day labor corners in Riverside and San Bernardino, with more sure to follow. Riverside, CA (May 1, 2009) – Twenty eight groups from all over the Inland Empire —immigrant rights groups, unions, workers, students, clergy, and human rights activists— united today to call for fair, comprehensive reform to end abuses against immigrants, workers, and their families. Students kicked off the march with a traditional ritual at UCR’s Bell Tower, and then joined supporters from Riverside and San Bernardino counties at Cesar Chavez Community Center to continue their journey to City Hall.

As of yet, La Sierra / Tyler districts of Riverside are no where near as bad as places like Eastside--where, you absolutely will get jumped for being the wrong color [between brown / black] for even just walking on the wrong side of the street b/c the turfs are so defined. But, if community members, parents, and students do not take direct action soon, we may very well be on our way to such a demise in other parts of Riverside. Race riots have been spreading in this part of town--from the big Castle Park incident on Valentines Day, to the La Sierra High shut downs the following week, and now this incident at Norte Vista which involved HUNDREDS, far more than the 15 students the press enterprise declares were involved. The District position continues to be to SUPRESS discussion about this as a tactic to calm the situation while simultaneously increasing police presence on campuses. Students need a space & opportunity to dialogue about this, come to their own solutions, and even receive trauma counseling for the violence they repeatedly face by simply showing up for school each day.

To the extent that an unauthorized person handles or counts votes, he or she is in violation of section 18575. * * * * * In Riverside County, California, I recently participated in the videotaping a statement that causes me concern. On election night, March 2, two people who do not work for the County, Sequoia employees Michael Frontera and Eddie Campbell were observed to access the WinEds central tabulator during the middle of the count. At this time, approximately 8:50 on election night, about one-third of Riverside's 157 precincts had been counted. At that point, the count was such that an automatic runoff would have been required between Linda Soubirous, a candidate for County Supervisor, and her opponent, Bob Buster. In the central count room of Riverside County at this time, no vote tabulation activity appeared to be going on. Two men were at the central tabulation terminals, the computers that add up all the votes from precincts around the county. Sequoia employee Michael Frontera was sitting at central tabulator terminal typing into the program, and Sequoia employee Eddie Campbell was standing next to him talking to him.
