Days of Action for Bradley Manning (tags)

"On September 16-19, groups and individuals will call on the United States government to drop the charges against Army Private First Class Bradley Manning. Twenty-two year old Manning, held in solitary confinement since May, has been charged with releasing classified documents including a video that shows American troops shooting and killing Reuters journalists in 2007. (Watch the video at www.collateralmurder.com) Manning’s imprisonment has resulted in an international outcry, with groups and activists throughout the US and abroad demanding his release and calling for transparency in America’s war policies. Famed Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg has called Mr. Manning, “A new hero of mine.” Act Locally! Activists should work within their communities to organize events locally during the International Days of Action. If you aren’t involved with a local group, contact your local affiliate of Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War or Code Pink, or look for activist groups in your area. Be Creative."

Winter Soldier Southwest on YouTube #1 (tags)

On Saturday, May 9, 2009 Iraq Veterans Against the War held hearings about war crimes and the abuse of our soldiers. The Winter Soldier Southwest heard from many American vets of the Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam and well as the victims of war and the families of vets. The Gold Star Families, Military Families Speak Out, Veterans For Peace, Vietnam Veterans for Peace and the Iraq Veterans for Peace were all represented. This is the testimony of Ryan Endicott about his experiences in Iraq.

Canadian MP Speaks Out for U.S. War Resister (tags)

Activist San Diego put together an impressive list of speakers for its March 16 meeting on the fate of U.S. war resister Robin Long — including Olivia Chow, a member of the Canadian Parliament who helped lead an unsuccessful struggle to persuade her country’s government to grant Long political asylum instead of returning him to the U.S. — but the most powerful voice of all came from someone who wasn’t there: Robin Long himself, via a letter from jail read aloud at the meeting.

A rally and march was held in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 19, 2009. It’s objective was to give President George W. He underscored the importance of appointing a “Special Prosecutor” to look into and hold accountable the culpable members of the Bush-Cheney Gang.

DNC Reflections: This Is What Activistism Looks Like (tags)

The two main protest groups – Unconventional Action and Recreate ‘68 – did not have an easy task with the local police and media spreading scare stories for months and with Barack Obama and the Democrats widely perceived as a reforming alternative to eight years of Republican rule. However, there was little effort made to bridge the comprehension gap.

DNC Protest, Split, and the Principled Stand of Cynthia McKinney (tags)

"As the United States activated Navy ships and the Air Force to begin an airlift of non-specified goods into the former Soviet state of Georgia, and military exercises began in the Persian Gulf near Iran, I received communications from certain individuals among the Colorado Greens who were organizing campaign support events there, suggesting that I not participate in an anti-war program being organized by other individuals in Colorado." -Cynthia McKinney In addition, the Green Party of Colorado has issued false statements to the press and all over the internet claiming that Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney will not be participating in the Recreate ’68 events. Here is one such statement from Dave Chandler, co-chair of the Colorado Green Party, Green Party candidate for U.S. Congress in the Seventh Congressional District, and supporter of a Denver ballot measure that would seize the vehicles of illegal immigrants: “Cynthia McKinney, Green Party candidate for President, and Rosa Clemente, Green Party candidate for Vice President are NOT participating in any Recreate ‘68 activities. Both candidates, and the Green Party of Colorado, are refuting this announcement and are stating that neither candidate, nor the Green Party of Colorado, are in any way associated with Recreate ’68, nor will any of their candidates be speaking at or attending any event, nor are they in any way associated with the group Recreate ’68.” This is a blatant lie. Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente will be speaking at the Recreate ’68 events.

Anti-War Campaigners Have to Change Electoral Tactics (tags)

‘So?” So said Dick Cheney when asked last week about public opinion being overwhelmingly against the war in Iraq. “You can’t be blown off course by polls.” A few days later, his attitude, about the fact that the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq has reached 4,000, displayed similar levels of sympathy. They “voluntarily put on the uniform,” the vice-president told ABC news. This brick wall of indifference helps explain the paradox in which we in the US anti-war camp find ourselves five years into the occupation of Iraq: anti-war sentiment is as strong as ever, but our movement seems to be dwindling. Sixty-four per cent of Americans tell pollsters they oppose the war, but you’d never know it from the thin turnout at recent rallies and vigils.

Vets REJECTED from Long Beach Vet's Parade Participation. DO SOMETHING! (tags)

This is in response to the article written in the Long Beach Press Telegram regarding the three groups of veterans and their families who were REJECTED from participating in the Veterans Day Parade, even though they and their families served and are continuing to serve their country with honor. My son just returned from his second tour in Iraq. We both believe in the Constitution ,which includes the right to speak out against this war. It is something that he is proud to fight for and will continue to follow orders if he is sent back to Iraq. While watching the entire parade from the sidelines, I was saddened to see that there were no participants from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan at all! That means that the only participants of this war that wanted to march in the parade were excluded. The city, as well as Val Lerch, who continued to try to make this a political issue, bear responsibility for this lack of support for our soldiers currently serving in this war. How could Council member Lerch, a proud member of this committee, overlook this glaring omission if he supports the troops? By the way, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, and Veterans for Peace carried no signs whatsoever. It was very important to us that we honor all the troops, and we enthusiastically applauded all participants. Also, please note, we had plenty of enthusiastic responses from the crowd and a few public displays of apology. This is an important point, because the city and committee knew we marched in last year’s parade without incident and that we are valid members of the military, unlike other groups like the medical insurance van, etc. This is why several cities, including La Palma, Palm Springs, Santa Monica, and other cities nationwide were inviting our groups to march in their parade; they understand that you can support the troops but not the administration’s policies that continue to blindly send our loved ones to die in a war that should never have happened in the first place. Apparently, the Veterans Day Committee and the city of Long Beach do not understand the difference. --Pat Alviso, Military Families Speak Out, Long Beach, CA, USA, Pat Alviso & Jeff Merrick, Military Families Speak Out Orange County & South Bay Chapter, www.mfsooc.org www.myspace.com/ocmfso 562-833-8035 Support Our Troops. LA and Nationwide: People Hit the Streets to Stop the War (tags)

The October 27 demonstrations represented another important step forward for the anti-war movement in the United States. Over 100,000 people took to the streets in coordinated regional and local protests to demand an immediate end to the war in Iraq, including well over 10,000 in Los Angeles.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Gets an "F" Grade (tags)

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has miserably failed the American people. Instead of standing up to the Bush-Cheney Gang on the illegal Iraq War, and a host of other issues, too, she has caved in. The American people voted for a change of policy on Iraq, in the Nov. 7, 2006 election; Pelosi has failed to deliver on that mandate. When ex-House Speaker Tom Foley let the voters down, they gave him the boot. It’s time to give Speaker Pelosi the boot, too!

Why is the antiwar movement so weak? (tags)

On Sept. 15, 2007, nearly 100,000 people -- led by anti-war Iraq veterans, military families and others -- marched from the White House to the Capitol in Washington, D.C. to demand an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq. The march concluded with a dramatic "die-in" of 5,000 people surrounding the Capitol. Almost 200 people were arrested when police prevented them taking an anti-war message to Congress.

September 15th Rally Is Unnerving Bush-Cheney Gang (tags)

The Bush-Cheney Gang is shaken by the coming massive antiwar rally set for September 15th, in Washington, D.C. On Sept. 6, 2007, it disrupted the ANSWER Coalition’s promotion of that demonstration. A cop-on-horseback interrupted ANSWER’s press conference that day. Three activists were also arrested. Plus, the antiwar activist, the Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., was assaulted by six Capitol Hill cops on Sept. 10th.

Ramsey Clark: Join me in DC on Sept. 15 (tags)

Below is an important message from former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark about the upcoming September 15 mass march and rally in Washington DC. ImpeachBush.org, the organization Ramsey Clark founded, and hundreds of other impeachment organizations are mobilizing with the anti-war movement for the September 15 Mass March. September 15 is when General David Petraeus makes his report to Congress about the Iraq war. Congress is expected to debate and vote on the question of Iraq war funding in mid-September. The latest this decision can come is Friday, September 28 - the last business day in the 2007 fiscal year. The impeachment movement is bringing thousands of people to join with the anti-war movement on September 15 to insist that Congress uphold its Constitutional mandate and introduce articles of impeachment against George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for High Crimes and Misdemeanors. Be in Washington DC on September 15 to make your voice heard!

M20: Chicago Mobilizes Against the War (tags)

In January, representatives of over 90 antiwar and community organizations gathered to begin organizing the Chicago area's response to the 4th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq - a mass march on Michigan Ave. As the scene of the largest mass false arrest in Chicago history and an on-going free speech battle with the city, organizing for the right to march on Michigan Avenue was seen as a symbol of the ongoing battle to defend civil liberties in Chicago, and in the nation at large. This year's march will be preceded by walkouts and feeder marches from area high school and college campuses.
