Cows On Fire In Washington. USDA Won't Let Montana Use Firefighting Helicopters (tags)

The biggest fire in Washington history, one of nearly 70 burning in Western states, has burned an area bigger than Rhode Island. States ask for volunteers. Inaction and lack of prioritization by the federal government has made this the worst fire season eve

State without Shame: Contradictions (tags)

The central question remains unanswered: why no society in the past could permanently guarantee freedom and equality. Are we lacking in brotherliness and human relations? Are we not equal to the size of the task? Or are we prisoners of structures that force us to act against our will?

Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" and the policy of Disaster Capitalism (tags)

"Shock and Awe" is what the media and pentagon called the bombardment of Baghdad by U.S. forces at the start of the 2003 Persian Gulf War. We remember the horrible visuals well, just as we remember, in graphic detail, our own shock and awe event on September 11, 2001, when we were treated to the first in a series of psychological trauma for the new the "War on Terror" PR campaign. Why Americans Tune in to Canada (tags)

My e-mail inbox overfloweth with missives from our neighbours to the south as, I expect, those of many of my Star colleagues do. Many Americans seem pathetically grateful for offshore, online sources for news and views of the world. Not that the Canadian media are perfect. We make our mistakes. We have our biases. But here, at least, there's a vigorous and wide-ranging debate on the looming war. So who can blame skeptical Americans for resorting to Canadians when their "most trusted" and "most watched'' media are marching in lockstep to the drums of war?
