All people are reporters (tags)

What is missing in the mainstream media landscape are background reports, essays, longer interviews, travel reports and what is called "investigative journalism". What is perhaps boring are ideology-critical internal debates about the right line, i.e. hermetic, exclusionary language. Many people know that Marxian political economy is back in fashion. But it needs an update.

No on 8 in Upland (tags)

October 29, 2008 UPLAND - This crop of activists were a little older than the bunch demonstrating in Rancho Cucamonga last Saturday, but not much. At times numbering more than 25 people, activists braved homophobic comments and a generally conservative climate to spread awareness of the harm prop 8 would bring to our communities.

"We Have an Upper Class Problem" (tags)

The unconditional basic income is a revolutionary idea but can only be realized in an evolutionary way.. We have long been in a foreign-provision economy. No one can provide for himself.. The state should offer people a basic income so they can live a modest humane life.

Report on ECHELON Surveillance System (tags)

This is a 2001 document from the European Parliament, who undertook a relatively independent investigation of the ECHELON surveillance system — bizarrely, many people continue to dismiss this as a mere conspiracy theory. Then again, many people are Mormons. This report is solid gold for anyone looking to understand the precise mechanics and methodology behind global interception of electronic communication. It goes into a great amount of detail and will prove invaluable to serious researchers.

Report from Oaxaca #2 (tags)

Today, people didn’t want to talk about fear, but instead about the anger the repression has filled them with. They denounced the government and proudly upheld their struggle. The last six months has changed people. They have stood up—or as many describe it, finally the people have said “enough,”—and and the changes that thousands are going through are not so easily crushed.

Report from Oaxaca - Dec. 22 - "Fear and Then a Wave of Joy" (tags)

Over and over and over again the same story repeats itself: "We were kidnapped, beaten, hands tied and thrown face-down in a truck with a kick to the head for trying to look up. We were taken to a helicopter and they said 'let's see if you can fly' . . .we thought we were going to die." Then today came a wave of joy -- thousands of people marching through the city of Oaxaca (along with other towns in Oaxaca, throughout Mexico, in the U.S. and Canada, in Europe, and in Latin America), their chants and songs filling the air for miles.

October 22nd Coalition Against Police Brutality (tags)

More than 500 people showed up at the annual protest against police brutality. In 2002 the numbers were much higher. Last year many people could not make it because of the bus strike, and this year many people were busy, I suppose, with the coming election. In 2005 and 2006 thought, the October 22nd Coalition Against Police Brutality will be held respectively on Saturday and Sunday. Many people who could not otherwise attend this protest because of commintments at work or at school will come massively in the streets to protest the increasingly oppressing police state backed by fascist legislations such as the Home Land Security Law. We’ll see you there, and we’ll rock the house! Below find 10 images about this year event.

The Illness of Despair (tags)

How many people know about the land mines that kill our children when they try to go to school? How many people read the tales of children shot in the back, because they're still outside the family complex when the curfew begins? How many people know how we have to sneak around simply to pick an orange off a tree?
